Ivan Sproule
Ivan Sproule (born 18 February 1981) is a Northern Irish retired professional footballer who was most recently manager of NIFL Championship side Dergview. Early in his career, Sproule played in Northern Ireland for Omagh Town and Institute. He became a full-time professional in January 2005, after he signed for Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, just a month before his 24th birthday. He made a significant impact at Hibernian, scoring a hat-trick against Rangers and earning selection by the Northern Ireland national team. Sproule moved to Football League Championship club Bristol City in 2007. After four years with the club, including loan spells at Yeovil Town and Notts County in his final season, Sproule agreed to return to Hibernian in May 2011, where he spent two more seasons. F. Harvey Sproule was a Canadian hockey player, National Hockey League coach, owner, executive, and referee, as well as a curler, journalist, and race horse owner. Early years From Milton, Ontario, where he attended school, Sproule was a competitive cyclist and played amateur hockey in his hometown. Records show Sproule lived with his Uncle John Head and his wife Mary Elizabeth Sproule in Milton as young as age 8 in 1891. Sproule's uncle, John Head, had been a Milton town councillor, and a business merchant in Milton since at least 1881, selling men's and women's clothing, before getting a customs job in Toronto and moving there with the family in the mid-1890s. Thomas Simpson Sproule (October 25, 1843 – November 10, 1917) was a Canadian parliamentarian, Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada from 1911–1915, and a member of the Canadian Senate from 1915–1917. Early life and education Sproule was born to James and Jane (née Mitchell) Sproule, farmers who had emigrated to King Township, Canada West from County of Tyrone, Ireland. His parents moved to Grey County when he was young, and he attended public schools there before studying at University of Michigan and Victoria University in Cobourg. He left school for two years before returning to Victoria University, graduating in 1868 with a degree in medicine. Robert Sproule (16 March 1881 – 16 July 1948) was an Irish-born Australian public servant and politician who served as Solicitor General for New South Wales from 1920 until 1922. Early life Sproule was born in Omagh in County Tyrone to farmer William Sproule and Mary Ann Clisdell. He attended the Crown Street Public School until he was 14, leaving to work as a correspondence clerk and bookkeeper, continuing his education at night school, He sat the public service exam in March 1899, and was appointed a junior clerk in the Petty Sessions office of the Justice Department at Goulburn, transferring to Redfern in December 1901. He passed a further examination for promotion in April 1904. He studied at the University of Sydney, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1907 and a Bachelor of Law in 1913. Paul Sproule (born 16 December 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club and Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), as well as for the Hobart Football Club and Sandy Bay Football Club in the Tasmanian Australian National Football League (TANFL). He also served brief stints as senior coach of Richmond, Hobart and Sandy Bay. Dáithí Sproule (born 23 May 1950) is a guitarist and singer of traditional Irish music. He is the grandson of Frank Carney and uncle of singer Claire Sproule. Biography Born and raised in Derry, Northern Ireland, at the age of 18 he moved to Dublin in Ireland, where he attended university. Growing up, he listened to Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, the Beatles, British folk songs and traditional Irish music. It was in Dublin that he entered the music scene which was prominent in Ireland at the time. As a teenager he had met the Ó Domhnaill family during trips to the Gaeltacht area of Rann na Feirste in Co. Donegal, and while in Dublin they formed a band, Skara Brae who would go on to have a great effect on Irish traditional music. Dáithí is well known as a guitarist and was one of the first guitarists to use the DADGAD guitar tuning for Irish music after the originator Davy Graham. Robert Auchmuty Sproule
Robert Auchmuty Sproule is an early artist in Canada, known through prints made from his watercolours. His prints were the beginning of lithography in the colony. Biography Sproule was born in Athlone, Ireland. He emigrated to Lower Canada in 1826 and established himself as an artist who made Portrait miniature, miniatures in Montreal, advertising that he had studied art in London and Dublin. In 1830, his six views of Montreal were published, engraved on copperplate from his watercolours. Curators consider them the "most handsome series published in Canada" and that they "demonstrate the maturity achieved in pictorial printmaking during the first half of the 19th century". Sproule continued creating watercolours (such as this view in Library and Archives Canada) to be made into prints (McCord Museum) and even publishing lithographs himself for the next four years. Clifford Sproule
Clifford Sproule (23 May 1905 – 24 April 1981) was an Australian tennis player and administrator. As a player he reached the semifinals of the Australian Championships singles. Sproule played Davis Cup, then was a manager of the Australian team and later still a referee. He was also President of the New South Wales Tennis Association. In 1976 he was awarded the OBE for services to tennis. Making his debut in the Australian men's singles, Sproule lost in the opening round in 1926 to Garton Hone. He lost in the second round in 1928 to Jean Borotra. He reached the quarter-finals in 1930 and 1931 (losing both to Jack Crawford). Wallace Sproule (17 April 1891 – 10 May 1957) was an Irish first-class cricketer. Early life Sproule was born at Killyleagh in County Down, and was educated at The Royal School, Armagh. After completing his secondary education Sproule went up to Trinity College, Dublin in 1909. He played his club cricket for Dublin University, who regularly played host to English county opposition. Career He served in the British Army with the infantry during World War I, where he held the rank of Second Lieutenant in August 1915. Emerging unscathed from the war, Sproule made a single appearance in first-class cricket for Ireland against Scotland at Dublin in 1923.
