The Spring Cup is a Conditions races, Listed Flat racing, flat Horse racing, horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years only. It is run at Lingfield Racecourse, Lingfield over a distance of 7 furlongs and 1 yard (), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late February or early March. Conditions Races
Conditions races are horse racing, horse races in which the weights carried by the runners are laid down by the conditions attached to the race. Weights are allocated according to the sex of the runners, with female runners carrying less weight than males; the age of the runners, with younger horses receiving weight from older runners to allow for relative maturity, referred to as weight for age; and the quality of the runners, with horses that have won certain values of races giving weight to less successful entrants. Conditions races are distinct from handicap races, for which the weights carried are laid down by an official handicapper to equalise the difference in ability between the runners. In Great Britain, for example, the British Horseracing Authority's rules define a conditions race as being one "which is none of the following; a Handicap Race or a Novice Race, a race restricted to Maiden Horses, or a race governed by Selling or Claiming provisions." Richard Kingscote
Richard Kingscote is a British jockey who competes in flat racing. He won the 2022 Epsom Derby on Desert Crown. Background Kingscote grew up in Weston-super-Mare in a family with no racing connections and started riding as a child. He attended the British Racing School and was then apprenticed to trainer Roger Charlton. Career Kingscote rode his first winner in 2004. In 2008 he became a stable jockey to trainer Tom Dascombe. Martin Harley (jockey)
Martin Harley (born 19 July 1989 in County Donegal, Ireland) is a Group 1 winning Irish jockey. Career Harley had spells as stable jockey for Mick Channon and Marco Botti, before turning freelance. His first Group 1 victory was for Channon on Samitar in the Irish 1,000 Guineas in May 2012. For Botti, he won the Prix Royal Oak the following year on Tac De Boistron, which helped him to a yearly prize money total of over £1 million for the first time. His breakthrough triumph was the 2015 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, on the Robert Cowell-trained Goldream. He won by a short head. Jim Crowley (born 14 July 1978) is an English jockey who was British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2016. He has ridden as first jockey for Hamdan Al-Maktoum's Shadwell racing operation since 2016. Background Crowley was born in Ascot and as a child competed in pony racing, including the Shetland Pony Grand National at the London International Horse Show. James Doyle (born 22 April 1988) is an English flat racing jockey. From 2014 to 2023, he was one of the retained riders to Godolphin Racing. In 2024, he left Godolphin to ride as first jockey for the Emir of Qatar's Wathnan Racing. Robert Francis Winston (born 28 November 1979) is an Irish jockey who competes in Flat racing. Biography He won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes on Magical Romance in 2004. In 2016, he won the Lester Award for flat ride of the year. Roger Varian
Roger Varian is a British Thoroughbred horse trainer, racehorse trainer, based at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk. Riding career Varian moved to the United States as a teenager and found employment as a work rider at Hollywood Park. On his return to the United Kingdom rode as a National Hunt jockey, mainly for the Josh Gifford stable, riding seven winners. He went back to the United States in 2001 for the Maryland-based Jack Fisher commenting that his riding career "needed a push forward". Andrea Atzeni
Andrea Atzeni (born 26 March 1991) is a professional Italian jockey who was based in England for sixteen years before moving to Hong Kong. He was born on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, where his father is a sheep farmer, and moved aged fifteen to Milan to work for Italian trainer Alduino Botti. Two years later he immigrated to England and joined the Prestige Place stables of Alduino's son Marco in Newmarket.
