Sprain (band)
Sprain was an American experimental rock band from Los Angeles, California that formed in 2018. Its final lineup consisted of Alexander Gregory Kent (guitar, vocals, keyboards), April Gerloff (bass guitar), Sylvie Simmons (guitar), and Clint Dodson (drums). The band released two studio albums and one EP before abruptly disbanding in 2023, a month after the release of their second album '' The Lamb as Effigy''. History Following the disbandment of Hybrid Sheep Organizer, Alex Kent and several former members regrouped to record new material. Shortly afterwards, April Gerloff would join the sessions and many of these recordings would end up comprising their self-titled debut EP, released in August 2018. It was inspired by slowcore bands such as Low and Duster. After adding two new members, Max Pretzer on drums and Sylvie Simmons on second guitar, they started to work on their debut album. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Slowcore
Slowcore, also known as sadcore, is a subgenre of indie rock characterised by its subdued tempos, minimalist instrumentation, and sombre vocal performances. Slowcore's influences are diverse, involving varying other genres, including folk rock, alternative rock, and dream pop. As a result of these contrasting stylistic directions, there is no definitive characterisation of the genre. The history of slowcore began in the late-1980s, with several bands forming in reaction to the abrasive sounds of grunge. The Flenser (also known as Flenser Records) is an American record label founded by Jonathan Tuite in 2009 in San Francisco, California. It describes itself as a "dark music" label or a "dark experimental record label". Bands that work with or have worked with The Flenser include Have a Nice Life, Deafheaven, Kayo Dot, Planning for Burial, Midwife, Chat Pile and Uboa. History The Flenser was founded in 2009 by former musician Jonathan Tuite in San Francisco, who originally intended to focus the label on the American black metal scene at the time. However, the scene changed as The Flenser slowly gained prominence, so Tuite expanded the reach of the label to other genres. ''The Lamb as Effigy'' (also referred to in extended form as ''The Lamb as Effigy or Three Hundred and Fifty XOXOXOS for a Spark Union With My Darling Divine'') is the second and final studio album by American experimental rock band Sprain. It was released on September 1, 2023 via The Flenser. The album was promoted with three singles; "Man Proposes, God Disposes", "Privilege of Being", and "We Think So Ill of You", and was planned to be followed by short series of concerts, of which only one took place before Sprain's disbandment in October 2023. Low was an American indie rock band from Duluth, Minnesota, formed in 1993 by Alan Sparhawk (guitar and vocals) and Mimi Parker (drums and vocals). The band was a trio from 1993 to 2020, having featured four different bassists. Low disbanded following the death of Parker in 2022. The music of Low was characterized by slow tempos and minimalist music, minimalist arrangements. Duster is an American indie rock band, formed in San Jose, California in 1996. For most of its history, the group consisted of multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton and Canaan Dove Amber alongside drummer Jason Albertini before Albertini left the band in 2022.
