Sport In Bulgaria
Bulgaria has established traditions in a great variety of sports. Olympics Bulgaria participates both in the Summer and Winter Olympics, and its first appearance dates back to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, when the Swiss gymnast Charles Champaud represented the country. Since then Bulgaria has appeared in most Summer Olympiads, and has won a total of 224 medals: 54 gold, 88 silver, and 82 bronze. The most successful participations took place at Munich (21 medals), Montreal (22 medals), Moscow (41), Seoul (35). At the Winter Olympic Games, Bulgaria has a less impressive record: only 6 medals (of which only one gold) out of 19 participations. Rumyana Neykova
Rumyana Neykova (; born 6 April 1973 in Sofia) is a Bulgarian rower, who competed at five Olympic Games. Biography Neykova competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics, the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 2000 Summer Olympics, where she won silver in the single sculls, the 2004 Summer Olympics, where she won bronze in the single sculls, and the 2008 Summer Olympics, where she won gold in the single sculls. Her current coach is her husband, Svilen Neykov. In 2002, she set the world best time of 7:07:41 in the women's single sculls and was named Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year (a title she earned again in 2008), as well as FISA Female Rower of the Year. Naim Süleymanoğlu (; 23 January 1967 – 18 November 2017) was a Bulgarian Turks, Turkish Olympic weightlifting, Olympic weightlifter. He was a seven-time World Weightlifting Championships, World Weightlifting champion and a three-time List of Olympic medalists in weightlifting, Olympic gold medalist who set 51 world records. At 147 cm in height, Süleymanoğlu's short stature and great strength led to him being nicknamed "Pocket Hercules". Yoto Yotov
Yoto Vasilev Yotov (, born May 22, 1969) is a Bulgarian Olympic weightlifting, weightlifter. Yotov is one of the greatest Bulgarian weightlifters of all time. He is a two-time Olympic silver medalist, three-time world champion, six-time European champion, winner of the 1991 World Cup. Holds a total of 51 medals from the Olympic Games, World and European Championships in total, snatch and clean and jerk - 22 gold, 22 silver and 7 bronze. Because of his long career and many medals, he has been called the Professor. He was voted Sportsperson of the Year of Bulgaria for 1997. Blagoy Blagoev
Blagoy Blagoev (; born 4 December 1956) is a retired Bulgarian weightlifter. Between 1976 and 1984 he claimed seven gold and five silver medals at the Summer Olympics and World and European championships. He set 18 world records. 13 of them were in the snatch. His last snatch world record was 195.5 kg in the 90 kg weight class, set on 1 May 1983 in Varna and remains the heaviest weight ever snatched by a middle heavyweight. Blagoev was twice declared the Best Weightlifter in the World by the International Weightlifting Federation - in 1982 and 1983. Blagoev was named Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year for 1982. Asen Zlatev
Asen Zlatev (; born 23 May 1960) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter. Biography Zlatev is an Olympic champion from the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games in Russia, in the category of up to 75 kg. At the age of 11 he joined the first group of weight lifting trainees in the Vasil Levski Sports School under the leadership of Gancho Karushkov. Zlatev has won three gold medals at World Championships (1980, 1982 and 1986) and five at European Championships (1980, 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1987). Demir Demirev
Demir Demirev (, born 31 August 1984) is a Bulgarian weightlifter. He is of Roma ethnicity. He participated in the men's -69 kg class at the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships and won the bronze medal, finishing behind Vencelas Dabaya and Shi Zhiyong. He snatched 143 kg and clean and jerked an additional 175 kg for a total of 318 kg, 14 kg behind winner Dabaya. At the 2007 World Weightlifting Championships he won the bronze medal in the 69 kg category with a total of 334 kg. Nikolaj Pešalov
Nikolay Peshalov (; born on May 30, 1970) is a Bulgarians in Croatia, Bulgarian-born Croatian Olympic Games, Olympic and World former champion in Olympic weightlifting, weightlifting. During his long and successful career, Pešalov was World champion eight times in various categories and disciplines, and broke several world records. Stefan Khristov Botev (, born February 14, 1968, in Harmanli) is an Olympic weightlifter who represented Bulgaria and later competed for Australia. He was coached by Ivan Abadzhiev. Botev is a two-time world and European champion, winner of the World Cup in 1988 and was voted as Bulgaria's Sportsperson of the Year in 1990. Stefan is a two-time Olympic bronze medalist - once for Bulgaria in 1992 and once for Australia in 1996. Botev is a three-time gold medalist from the Goodwill Games in Seattle in 1990.
