Spintherobolidae
Spintherobolidae, also known as piquiras, are a small Family (biology), family of freshwater fish in the Order (biology), order Characiformes. It contains only two genera (one Monotypic taxon, monotypic and the other with 4 species), both of which are Endemism, endemic to Brazil. Both genera in this family were originally placed in the Characidae (originally in the Cheirodontini, then in a distinct subfamily in 2018), but in 2024 they were upgraded to being their own family. The following genera are placed in this family: * ''Amazonspinther'' Bührnheim, Carvalho, Malabarba & Stanley Howard Weitzman, Weitzman, 2008 * ''Spintherobolus'' Carl H. Eigenmann, Eigenmann, 1911 Of the two extant genera, the single species of ''Amazonspinther'' is found in the Amazon basin, while the 4 species of ''Spintherobolus'' are restricted to rivers draining the Atlantic Forest. In addition, a single fossil genus, †''Megacheirodon'' Malabarba, 1998 is known from the Late Oligocene-aged Tremembà ...

Characidae, the characids, is a Family (biology), family of Fresh water, freshwater subtropical and tropical fish belonging to the Order (biology), order Characiformes. They are found throughout much of Central America, Central and South America, including such major waterways as the Amazon River, Amazon and Orinoco Rivers.Nelson (2006) These fish vary in length; many are less than . The name "Characin, characins" is a historical one, but scientists today tend to prefer "characids" to reflect their status as a, by and large, monophyletic group (at family rank). This family includes some of the first characiforms to be described to science, such as ''Charax (fish), Charax'' and ''Tetragonopterus'', and thus lend their name to the order, as well as to common names such as "characin" and "tetra". Past taxonomic treatments had a much more expansive definition of the family, including numerous South American fish families such as the Piranha, piranhas and Bryconidae, dorados, as well ...
