Hyron Spinrad
Hyron Spinrad (February 17, 1934 – December 7, 2015) was an American astronomer. His research has ranged from the study of planet atmospheres to the evolution of Galaxy, galaxies. From 2010 until his death in late 2015 he was an emeritus professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. Biography Spinrad was born in New York in 1934. After his family moved to California, he received a Bachelor of Arts in astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. Following graduation, he enrolled in the United States Army, and began work in the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency#Army Map Service (AMS) / U.S. Army Topographic Command (USATC), Army Map Service. After two years in the Army, he applied to and was accepted to the graduate program at Berkeley in 1957. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in 1961, writing his thesis on stellar populations in galactic nuclei. Norman Richard Spinrad (born September 15, 1940) is an American science fiction author, essayist, and critic. His fiction has won the Prix Apollo and been nominated for numerous awards, including the Hugo Award and multiple Nebula Awards. Personal life Born in New York City, Spinrad is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science. In 1957 he entered City College of New York and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree as a pre-law major. He has lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Paris, and New York City. He married fellow novelist N. Lee Wood in 1990; they divorced in 2005. Spinrad served as President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) from 1980 to 1982 and again from 2001 to 2002. Richard William Spinrad is an American oceanographer and government official serving as the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He also concurrently serves as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. Early life and education Raised in New York City, Spinrad earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in earth and planetary sciences in 1975 from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master of Science and a PhD in oceanography in 1978 and 1982, respectively, from Oregon State University at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
