Spinal Muscular Atrophy With Lower Extremity Predominance 2B
Spinal muscular atrophy with lower extremity predominance 2B (SMALED2B) is a rare neuromuscular disorder characterised by generalised muscle weakness. Indications Decreased foetal movement is apparent already before birth. The child is born with a generalised muscle weakness (hypotonia) and contractures resembling arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, respiratory insufficiency, and sometimes facial deformations. The disorder is frequently fatal in early childhood. Cause The disease is caused by a mutation in the ''BICD2'' gene and is passed on in an autosomal dominant manner. There is no known cure to SMALED2B. Hypotonia is a state of low muscle tone (the amount of tension or resistance to stretch in a muscle), often involving reduced muscle strength. Hypotonia is not a specific medical disorder, but a potential manifestation of many different diseases and disorders that affect motor nerve control by the brain or muscle strength. In pathology, a contracture is a permanent shortening of a muscle or joint. It is usually in response to prolonged hypertonic spasticity in a concentrated muscle area, such as is seen in the tightest muscles of people with conditions like spastic cerebral palsy, but can also be due to the congenital abnormal development of muscles and connective tissue in the womb. Arthrogryposis (AMC) describes congenital joint contracture in two or more areas of the body. It derives its name from Greek, literally meaning "curving of joints" (', "joint"; ', late Latin form of late Greek ', "hooking").
