Caroline Spelman
Dame Caroline Alice Spelman (' Cormack; born 4 May 1958) is a British Conservative Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Meriden in the West Midlands from 1997 to 2019. From May 2010 to September 2012 she was the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in David Cameron's coalition cabinet, and was sworn as a Privy Counsellor on 13 May 2010. Spelman (music)
A spelman () is a player of Swedish folk music. The term has also the same meaning for Norwegian folk music, and corresponds directly to the term ''spillemand'' in Danish traditional music. Less often spelmän may be folk musicians from other Nordic countries, from other European countries, from non-European countries, and even musicians in other genres. The meaning of the Swedish word spelman is very similar to that of the English "fiddler," except that it is not tied to a specific instrument. Because of the commonality of the fiddle in Swedish folk music, the word is often translated as fiddler in any case. Technically, the actual Swedish word for fiddler would be "fiolspelman" (fiddle spelman). The other common translation of this word is folk musician. The problem here is that the Swedish word "folkmusiker," meaning folk musician, was invented explicitly in opposition to the older word "spelman." Timothy Mather Spelman
Timothy Mather Spelman (January 21, 1891 – August 21, 1970) was an American composer. Spelman was a native of Brooklyn, and studied in New York with Harry Rowe Shelley in 1908; further study came with Albert Spalding and Edward Burlingame Hill at Harvard University from 1909 until 1913, and from 1913 to 1915 with Walter Courvoisier at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. In the latter year, returning to the United States, Spelman took up a post as assistant director of training for band musicians under the United States Department of War. In 1918 he and his wife, the poet Leolyn Louise Everett, returned to Europe and settled in Florence; except for the years between 1935 and 1947, during which the couple returned to the United States, he spent the rest of his life resident in Italy. Laura Celestia "Cettie" Spelman Rockefeller (September 9, 1839 – March 12, 1915) was an American abolitionist, philanthropist, school teacher, and prominent member of the Rockefeller family. Sir John Spelman (died 1546) was an English judge from Norfolk, noted for his composition of law reports. Origins Born about 1480, Spelman was the fourth son and youngest child of Henry Spelman (died 1496), of Bekerton in Stow Bedon, a lawyer and judge who was a Reader of Gray's Inn and Recorder of Norwich, and his second wife Ela, widow of Thomas Shouldham (died 1472), of Marham, and daughter and coheiress of William Narborough, of Narborough. Spelman's family originated in Hampshire, where before 1272 they held the manor of Brockenhurst, but by 1369 had moved to Norfolk where they had lands in and later acquired the manor of Bekerton.
