Spello Pietà
The Spello Pietà is a fresco of the Pietà by Perugino executed in 1521–1522. It also shows John the Apostle and Mary Magdalene kneeling either side of the Virgin Mary. The Pietà (; meaning "pity", "compassion") is a subject in Christian art depicting the Mary (mother of Jesus), Blessed Virgin Mary cradling the mortal body of Jesus Christ after his Descent from the Cross. It is most often found in sculpture. The Pietà is a specific form of the Lamentation of Christ in which Jesus is mourned by the Virgin Mary alone. However, in practice works called a ''Pietà'' may include angels, the other figures usual in ''Lamentations'', and even donor portraits. An image consisting only of a dead Christ with angels is also called a Pietà, at least in German, where ''Engelpietà'' (literally "Angel Pietà") is the term for what is usually called ''Dead Christ supported by angels'' in English. Pietro Perugino ( ; ; born Pietro Vannucci or Pietro Vanucci; – 1523), an Italian Renaissance painter of the Umbrian school, developed some of the qualities that found classic expression in the High Renaissance. Raphael became his most famous pupil. Early years Pietro Vannucci was born in Città della Pieve, Umbria, the son of Cristoforo Maria Vannucci. His nickname characterizes him as from Perugia, the chief city of Umbria. Scholars continue to dispute the socioeconomic status of the Vannucci family. While certain academics maintain that Vannucci worked his way out of poverty, others argue that his family was among the wealthiest in the town. His exact date of birth is not known, but based on his age at death that was mentioned by Giorgio Vasari, Vasari and Giovanni Santi, it is believed that he was born between 1446 and 1452. Spello (in Antiquity: Hispellum) is an ancient town and ''comune'' (township) of Italy, in the province of Perugia in eastern-central Umbria, on the lower southern flank of Monte Subasio. It is 6 km (4 mi) NNW of Foligno and 10 km (6 mi) SSE of Assisi. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy"). The old walled town lies on a regularly NW-SE sloping ridge that eventually meets the plain.
