Speedrunning
Speedrunning is the act of playing a video game, or section of a video game, with the goal of completing it as fast as possible. Speedrunning often involves following planned routes, which may incorporate sequence breaking and can exploit glitches that allow sections to be skipped or completed more quickly than intended. Tool-assisted speedrunning is a sub-category of speedrunning that uses emulation software to slow the game down and create a precisely controlled sequence of inputs. Many online communities develop around speedrunning specific games; community leaderboard rankings for individual games form the primary competitive metric for speedrunning. Racing between two or more speedrunners is also a popular form of competition. Videos and livestreams of speedruns are shared via the internet on media sites such as YouTube and Twitch. European Speedrunner Assembly
European Speedrunner Assembly (abbreviated to ESA), formerly ''European Speedster Assembly'', is a semi-annual video game speedrunning charity marathon held in Sweden. Held since 2012, the events have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for several charities. The two flagship events of the European Speedrunner Assembly are European Speedrunner Assembly Winter, held in February every year, and ESA Summer, held between June and August every year. Both events last seven days. In addition to these events, ESA also hosts smaller European-based speedrunning events such as the Benelux Speedrunner Gathering (BSG), as well as Break the Record: Live, a three-day competition to break the world record of a specified game and category. Celeste (video Game)
''Celeste'' is a 2018 platform game developed and published by indie developer Matt Makes Games. It stars Madeline, a young girl with anxiety and depression who aims to climb Celeste Mountain. During her climb, she encounters several characters, including a personification of her self-doubt known as Badeline, who attempts to stop her from climbing the mountain. Development of ''Celeste'' began in August 2015, when Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry participated in a four-day-long game jam, in which they created ''Celeste'' for the PICO-8. Tool-assisted Speedrun
A tool-assisted speedrun, or tool-assisted superplay (TAS ), is generally defined as speedrunning an emulated game. During development of the speedrun, the framerate is slowed down to allow precise inputs to be done with ease. Splicing, the action of adding inputs from other speedruns is also used. The goal of a TAS is to create a theoretically perfect playthrough. A TAS is created by a person who can use tools to perform impressive feats in a video game. The person creating such a run uses what they know about the game, what they learned from others, and what they discovered themselves to make their tool-assisted speedrun. Tool-assisted speedruns are generally created with the goal of creating the perfect speedrun. Games Done Quick
Games Done Quick (GDQ) is a semiannual video game speedrun charity marathon held in the United States, originally organized by the Speed Demos Archive and SpeedRunsLive communities. Since 2015, it has been handled by Games Done Quick, LLC. Held since 2010, the events have raised money for several charities. The two flagship events held by Games Done Quick are Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), held in early January every year, which raises money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, and Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ), usually held in late June or early July every year, which raises money for Doctors Without Borders. Both events last for seven days. In computer and video games, sequence breaking is the act of performing actions or obtaining items out of the intended linear order or of skipping "required" actions or items entirely. Sequence breaking is often used to beat a game unusually quickly (see speedrunning), to beat it while only completing a few objectives or obtaining a few items, to obtain useful items early in the game, to make the game more difficult, or to help push a game as far as possible in some other way.
