The Paddy Power Cheltenham Countdown Podcast is a Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run on the New Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and 4½ furlongs (2 miles 4 furlongs and 127 yards, or 4,139 metres) and during the race there are 17 fences to be jumped. It is a handicap race, and is scheduled to take place each year in late January. Prior to 2014 it was run as the Murphy Group Chase and from 2014 to 2016 it was sponsored by freebets.com It is currently sponsored by the Paddy Power bookmaking company. The race was first run in 1993 and was awarded Listed status in 2002, when it was known as the Ladbroke Trophy Chase. It was awarded Grade 3 status in 2005 and re-classified as a Premier Handicap in 2023. In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. In the UK the biggest National Hunt events of the year are generally considered to be the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Jim Culloty
Jim Culloty is a racehorse trainer and retired professional National Hunt jockey who won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same season. Culloty and Mick Fitzgerald both worked for Jackie Retter, who trained at Whitstone, near Exeter, before they went their separate ways, Culloty to work for Henrietta Knight while Fitzgerald went with Nicky Henderson. Culloty rode forty-four winners as an amateur during the 1996 racing season, after which he turned professional. Throughout his career he won 394 races. He is most associated with two horses, Best Mate and Bindaree, winning three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups on the former, and in 2002 going on to win the Grand National on the latter. He later became only the 4th person ever to ride and train a horse to the Cheltenham Gold Cup when training Lord Windermere under jockey Davy Russell. Annacotty (horse)
Annacotty () is a small village on the outskirts of Limerick, Ireland, from the centre of the city. It is situated where the old N7 main road between Limerick and Dublin crosses the Mulkear River, upstream of where it flows into the River Shannon. History The village originally grew up around the grain mills which harnessed the water power of the River Mulkear. Clonkeen Church was established as a monastic site c. AD 600. One was beside the bridge itself and has now been restored as bar and restaurant and the second was upstream at Ballyclough. Annacotty Co-Operative Society was founded in the 1890s and butter was made at the creamery up to the 1960s when it was taken over by Black Abbey Co-operative of Adare (which, after a succession of mergers, became part of the Dairygold Co-op). Venetia Williams
Venetia Williams (born 10 May 1960) is an English racehorse trainer specialising in National Hunt racing. She is based at stables at Aramstone in Herefordshire, England. Williams was born at Scorrier House, Cornwall and began as a racehorse trainer at Ty-Pengam. She was an amateur National Hunt jockey until forced to retire after suffering a broken neck in 1988. She worked for racehorse trainers Martin Pipe and John Edwards before taking up a licence to train herself in 1995. Her most successful horse to date has been Mon Mome, winner of the 2009 Grand National. This victory made her only the second female trainer to win the race, after Jenny Pitman. Aidan Coleman
Aidan Coleman (born 17 August 1988) is an Irish National Hunt jockey, who has ridden multiple Grade 1 winners in the United Kingdom including at the Cheltenham Festival. Career Coleman was born in Cork, Ireland and moved to England in 2006 working for trainer Henrietta Knight. His first ride was in December of the same year, finishing 9th at Hereford riding Silverbar. His first victory came the following year onboard Tashkandi at Uttoxeter. Coleman would switch to being the retained jockey with Venetia Williams, and won the 2008/09 champion conditional jockey championship with 55 winners. In April he rode in his first Grand National, onboard Mon Mome, becoming one of the youngest ever jockeys in the race aged 19. He was one of the youngest riders ever to start the Grand National. Daryl Jacob is an Irish National Hunt jockey who rode for trainer Paul Nicholls as second jockey to Ruby Walsh. When Walsh left the Nicholas yard Jacob took over as principal rider. He won at the Cheltenham festival for the first time in 2011 on Zarkandar in the Triumph Hurdle. His second Cheltenham Festival win was in 2014 on Lac Fontana in the Vincent O Brien County Handicap Hurdle on the last day of the festival. However, before the start of the next race he suffered a broken leg, knee and elbow after Port Melon crashed into the rail. Jacob won the 2012 Grand National on the grey Neptune Collonges. The pairing beat second-place Sunnyhillboy in a photo finish and the closest ever finish to a Grand National. David Pipe (racehorse Trainer)
David Pipe (born 7 February 1973) is a horse racing trainer based in Somerset. He is the son of 15 time champion trainer Martin Pipe. Early career Pipe started riding in point to points in 1992 and scored 22 wins in 5 seasons, and 2 under rules - including on Bonanza Boy in the Ludlow Gold Cup. After retiring from the saddle he would begin learning the training craft across the globe spending time with Michael Dickinson, Criquette Head-Maarek and Joey Ramsden. Training career Pipe began training point to point horses and had great success with 164 winners over six seasons. In April 2006, he took over the training licence from his father Martin Pipe. Peter Beaumont (1934 – 29 March 2020) was a British racehorse trainer. Beaumont began by training horses on the amateur Point-to-point circuit from his stables at Foulrice Farm near Brandsby in Yorkshire.
