The Spearfish Sasquatch is a baseball team in the Independence League Baseball based in Spearfish, South Dakota. They are one of two teams based in South Dakota, their home games are played at Black Hills Energy Stadium. They were formed in October 2017. They played in the Expedition League in 2018, 2019 and 2021 before joining the new Independence League Baseball for the 2022 season. Spearfish, South Dakota
Spearfish ( Lakota: ''Hočhápȟe'') is a city in Lawrence County, South Dakota. The population was 12,193 at the time of the 2020 census. History Before the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, the area was used by Native Americans (primarily bands of Sioux but others also ranged through the area). Once the gold rush started, the city was founded in 1876 at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon, and was originally called Queen City. Spearfish grew as a supplier of foodstuffs to the mining camps in the hills. Even today, a significant amount of truck farming and market gardening still occurs in the vicinity. In 1887, the accepted history of gold mining in the Black Hills was thrown into question by the discovery of what has become known as the Thoen Stone. Independence League Baseball is a collegiate summer baseball league in the United States with teams playing in Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The league played its inaugural season in 2022 with ten teams. Expedition League
The Expedition League is a collegiate summer baseball league in the Great Plains region of the United States and Canada. The league was founded in 2015 in Rapid City, South Dakota, by Steve Wagner, who also serves as president. The league's inaugural season was 2018 with eight teams. Teams play a 62-game season from late May through the beginning of August. Playoffs take place in the second week of August with teams seeded for the playoffs, with each team making the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs is a best-of-three series and the League Championship Series is also a best-of-three series.
