Spathula Ochyra
''Spathula'' is a genus of dugesiid triclad. Its species are found in Australia and New Zealand. Until 1977, ''Spathula'' was ranked as a subgenus of ''Dugesia''. The name of the genus derives from the Latin , meaning "broad, flat piece". Description Specimens of this genus have a triangular head.Ball, I. R.: A contribution to the phylogeny and biogeography of the freshwater triclads (Platyhelminthes: Turbellaria). Biology of the Turbellaria (Edited by: Riser NW and Morse MP). New York: McGraw-Hill New York 1974, 339-401. Along with this, the genus was originally defined as planarians with "one atrium (undivided) around the penis, into which opens the Reproductive system of planarians#Accessory structures, bursa stalk" and numerous testes.Nurse, Frances R. 1950Freshwater triclads new to the fauna of New Zealand ''Transactions of the Royal Society of New Zealand'' 78(4): 410-417. Genus
Genus (; : genera ) is a taxonomic rank above species and below family (taxonomy), family as used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomy (biology), taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. Phylogeneti ...
