The play was directed by John Cairns. Premise "Tells of the great slave revolt against the tyranny of Rome in 73 B.C. It was a movement that began with the escape of a few slave-gladiators from arenas where they were forced to hack each other with swords for the benefit of a blood-lusting Roman crowd. Dymphna Cusack
Ellen Dymphna Cusack Order of Australia, AM (21 September 1902 – 19 October 1981) was an Australian writer and playwright. She also wrote as Atalanta. Personal life Born in Wyalong, New South Wales, Cusack was educated at Saint Ursula's College, Armidale, New South Wales and graduated from the University of Sydney with an honours degree in arts and a diploma in Education. She worked as a teacher until she retired in 1944 for health reasons. Her illness was confirmed in 1978 as multiple sclerosis. She died at Manly, New South Wales, Manly, New South Wales on 19 October 1981. Career Cusack wrote twelve novels (two of which were collaborations), eleven plays, three travel books, two children's books and one non-fiction book. Her collaborative fiction, collaborative novels were ''Pioneers on Parade'' (1939) with Miles Franklin, and ''Come In Spinner'' (1951) with Florence James. Spartacus (; ) was a Thracians, Thracian gladiator (Thraex) who was one of the Slavery in ancient Rome, escaped slave leaders in the Third Servile War, a major Slave rebellion, slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Historical accounts of his life come primarily from Plutarch and Appian, who wrote more than a century after his death. Plutarch's ''Life of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Crassus'' and Appian's ''Civil Wars'' provide the most comprehensive details of the slave revolt. Despite being a significant figure in Roman history, no contemporary sources exist, and all accounts were by those not directly involved, significantly later, and without perspectives from slaves or eyewitnesses. Little is known about him beyond the events of the war, and surviving accounts are contradictory. All sources agree he was a former gladiator and accomplished military leader.
