Spanky (film)
''Spanky'' is a 1932 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Robert F. McGowan. It was the 113th ''Our Gang'' short to be released. The film focuses on ''Our Gang'' co-star George "Spanky" McFarland. Plot Although this is a remake of a 1920s silent ''Our Gang'' episode called '' Uncle Tom's Uncle'', the main character is Spanky. Early scenes of this film were part of Spanky's screen test taken back in April 1931 during his first visit to Hal Roach Studios, which included him "bug hunting." Meanwhile, Spanky's brother Breezy Brisbane and the rest of the gang are putting on a play of Uncle Tom's Cabin. At the same time, Brisbane is forced to babysit Spanky while their mother goes on a shopping trip. Also, Spanky's father refuses to spend money in order to keep the house clean, although he has an enormous amount of cash hidden in a secret door embedded in the wall. Robert E. Hutchins (March 29, 1925 – May 17, 1945) was an American child actor who was a regular in the ''Our Gang'' short subjects series from 1927 to 1933. A native of Tacoma, Washington, he was given the nickname of Wheezer after running around the studios on his first day so much that he began to wheeze. Early life Bobby Hutchins was born to James and Olga (Constance) Hutchins in Washington. His father was a native of Kentucky and his mother a native of Washington State. Career Wheezer appeared in 58 ''Our Gang'' films during his six years in the series. For much of his run, "Wheezer" was portrayed as the perennial tag-along little brother, put off by the older children but always eager to be part of the action. William Gilbert Barron (September 12, 1894 – September 23, 1971), known professionally as Billy Gilbert, was an American actor and comedian. He was known for his comic sneeze routines. He appeared in over 200 feature films, short subjects and television shows beginning in 1929. Career Early life and vaudeville career The child of singers with the Metropolitan Opera, he was born on September 12, 1894, in a dressing room at the Hopkins Opera House in Louisville, Kentucky. As a child, he lived in San Francisco, and he left school to be in a troupe of singing children. His early work included a female-impersonation act and professional boxing.
