Space Oddity (song)
"Space Oddity" is a song by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was first released on 11 July 1969 by Philips Records, Philips and Mercury Records as a Single (music), 7-inch single, then as the opening track of his second studio album, ''David Bowie (1969 album), David Bowie''. Produced by Gus Dudgeon and recorded at Trident Studios in London, it is a tale about a fictional astronaut named Major Tom; its title and subject matter were partly inspired by ''2001: A Space Odyssey'' (1968) and Bowie's feelings of Social alienation, alienation at that point in his career. Its sound departed from the music hall of his David Bowie (1967 album), debut album to psychedelic folk inspired by the Bee Gees; it was one of the most musically complex compositions he had written up to that point. ''David Bowie'' is the debut studio album by the English musician David Bowie, originally released in the United Kingdom on 1 June 1967 through Decca Records, Decca subsidiary Deram Records. Produced by Mike Vernon (record producer), Mike Vernon and recorded from November 1966 to March 1967 in London, the album followed a string of Single (music), singles Bowie released for Pye Records that failed to chart. Kenneth Pitt
Kenneth Cooper Pitt (10 November 1922 – 25 February 2019) was a British publicist and talent manager, who managed the career of musicians including David Bowie in the late 1960s. Biography Pitt was born in Uxbridge, Middlesex. In the 1950s, he was responsible for publicising American musicians and bands touring the UK, including Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Jerry Lee Lewis. His first venture into management was with Romani street singer Danny Purches, but he had more success in the early 1960s with the band Manfred Mann, whom he persuaded to record the Barry and Greenwich song "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". He also managed singer Crispian St. Peters and American group Goldie and the Gingerbreads. Deram Records was a subsidiary record label of Decca Records established in the United Kingdom in 1966. At the time, U.K. Decca was a different company from the Decca label in the United States, which was owned by MCA Inc.
