Southland Wind Farm
The Southland Wind Farm, also referred to as the Slopedown Wind Farm, is a proposed wind farm near Wyndham in the Southland district of New Zealand. If built it would be the largest wind farm in New Zealand. A wind farm on this site was first proposed in 2008, but did not progress. The idea was revived in 2023 by Contact Energy. The current proposal is for 55 turbines. The project sought resource consent, which was opposed by some nearby residents. The application was declined in March 2025. The panel who made the decision noted the project's economic and social benefits, but was not satisfied that the adverse effects – such as impacts on birds, bats, and lizards – could be offset or compensated for. Proposal The latest version of the proposal, by Contact Energy, is for 55 turbines that are 220 metres base to tip, with a total a maximum generation of 300MW. Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter
The Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter is an Aluminium smelting, aluminium smelter owned by Rio Tinto (corporation), Rio Tinto Group, via a joint venture called New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) Limited. The facility, New Zealand's only aluminium smelter, is at Tiwai Point, near Bluff, New Zealand, Bluff. It imports Aluminium oxide, alumina and processes it into primary aluminium. The plant's alumina is supplied from refineries in Queensland and the Northern Territory, Northern Territory of Australia. Around 90 per cent of the aluminium produced at NZAS is exported, mainly to Japan. The smelter was opened in 1971 following the construction of the Manapouri Power Station by the New Zealand government to supply it with electricity. Wind Power In New Zealand
Wind power constitutes a small but growing proportion of New Zealand's electricity. As of November 2023, wind power accounts for 1,059 MW of installed capacity and over 6 percent of electricity generated in the country. New Zealand has abundant wind resources. The country is in the path of the Roaring Forties, strong and constant westerly winds, and the funneling effect of Cook Strait and the Manawatū Gorge increase the resource's potential. Over three-quarters (512 MW) of the country's wind generation is installed within a radius of Palmerston North, with some turbines in the area having a capacity factor of over 50 percent. Turitea Wind Farm is a 222-megawatt wind farm near Turitea, Palmerston North, New Zealand. The farm is owned and operated by Mercury Energy. Turitea is the largest wind farm by nameplate capacity in New Zealand, overtaking nearby Tararua Wind Farm. Most of the wind farm land is located in the Turitea Reserve. The project was initially planned for 131 wind turbines with a capacity of over 300 MW, while final approval was given for 60 turbines. A resource consent is the authorisation given to certain activities or uses of natural and physical resources required under the New Zealand Resource Management Act (the "RMA"). Some activities may either be specifically authorised by the RMA or be permitted activities authorised by rules in plans. Southland District
Southland District is a New Zealand Districts of New Zealand, territorial authority district that covers most of the southern end of the South Island as well as Stewart Island. History Southland District was formed through the 1989 local government reforms. Four local authorities were amalgamated at that time: Wallace County, New Zealand, Wallace County, Winton Borough, Stewart Island County and most of Southland County.
