Southern Pacific 2706
Southern Pacific 2706 is a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Class C-8 steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1904 for the Southern Pacific Transportation Company (SP). It is one of three surviving members of its class, and one of many preserved SP 2-8-0s. History Number 2706 was retired along with the remaining Southern Pacific steam fleet in the late 1950s at the Bayshore Yard near Brisbane, California. After retirement, it was moved to Watsonville in 1962, and it was purchased by Rick Hammond and the Eccles & Eastern Railroad Company. It was moved to Santa Cruz on the day of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, where it was purchased by John Manley in 1999 (from Mike Hart) and subsequently moved to Colusa in 2007. Previously, Manley had worked on the team which restored Southern Pacific 2467, SP 2467. A new shop was constructed in 2012 to accommodate work on 2706. The Southern Pacific (or Espee from the railroad initials) was an American Railroad classes#Class I, Class I Rail transport, railroad network that existed from 1865 to 1996 and operated largely in the Western United States. The system was operated by various companies under the names Southern Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific Company and Southern Pacific Transportation Company. The original Southern Pacific began in 1865 as a land holding company. The last incarnation of the Southern Pacific, the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, was founded in 1969 and assumed control of the Southern Pacific system. Southern Pacific 2718 is a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Class C-8 steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1904 for the Southern Pacific Transportation Company (SP). It is one of three surviving members of its class, and one of many preserved SP 2-8-0s. 2718 spent its entire life working on the Southern Pacific for 52 years until November 1956, when it was retired and donated to Modoc County, California, where it is preserved on static display outdoors in Rachael Dorris Park, near the Modoc County Historical Museum in Alturas. While in service for the SP, 2718 was used on the route previously established by the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway (N.C.O.) between Alturas and Reno, Nevada, primarily pulling livestock freight trains, but also including passenger service between 1927 and 1938. Southern Pacific 2467 is a preserved Southern_Pacific_Class_P-8, P-8 class 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive. Built by Baldwin in 1921, it was used by the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, Southern Pacific Railroad to pull Passenger train, passenger trains until it was retired from service in 1956. On July 25, 1960, it was donated to the city of Oakland, California, who had it placed on display at the Harrison Railroad Park. In July 1990 a restoration began by the Friends of the 2467, which later merged into the Pacific Locomotive Association. In June 1999 it was returned to operation and made an appearance at Railfair 1999. On October 17, 1989, at 5:04 p.m. Pacific Time Zone, PST, the Loma Prieta earthquake occurred at the Central Coast (California), Central Coast of California. Bayshore Yard
The Bayshore Cutoff (originally the Southern Pacific Bay Shore Cut-Off) is the rail line between San Francisco and San Bruno along the eastern shore (San Francisco Bay side) of the San Francisco Peninsula. It was completed by Southern Pacific (SP) in 1907 at a cost of $7 million (equivalent to $ adjusted for inflation), and included five tunnels, four of which are still used by Caltrain, the successor to Southern Pacific's Peninsula Commute service. Fill from the five tunnels was used to build the Visitacion or Bayshore Yard, the main SP classification yard near the city of Brisbane. The '' Del Monte'' was similarly rerouted over the line at some point in its operational history.
