Southern Appalachian Labor School
The Southern Appalachian Labor School, or SALS (pronounced like the possessive form of Sal) as it is abbreviated, is a non-profit organization that serves Fayette County, West Virginia. It was founded in 1977, initially to educate local workers and others about labor law, unions and organization. Over the years, SALS has grown to include programs for low income housing, weatherization and rehabilitation of homes, three programs for children, two separate food assistance programs, and Youthbuild/Americorps/Americorps VISTA programs through the Corporation for National Service. SALS hosts a number of volunteers each year, through organizations such as Christian Endeavor, Group Workcamps, Humanitarian XP and Global Volunteers. SALS hosted over 1500 volunteers in 2007. Fayette County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,488. Its county seat is Fayetteville. It is part of the Beckley, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area in Southern West Virginia. History Fayette County—originally Fayette County, Virginia—was created by the Virginia General Assembly in February 1831, from parts of Greenbrier, Kanawha, Nicholas, and Logan counties. It was named in honor of the Marquis de la Fayette, who had played a key role assisting the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The second Virginia county so named, it was among the 50 counties which Virginia lost when West Virginia was admitted to the Union as the 35th state in 1863, during the American Civil War. Montgomery is a city in West Virginia, United States, along the Kanawha River. Most of the city is in Fayette County, West Virginia, Fayette County, with the remainder in Kanawha County, West Virginia, Kanawha County. Kincaid is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 191 (down from 260 at the 2010 census). Kincaid is located on West Virginia Route 61, northwest of Oak Hill. Kincaid has a post office with ZIP code 25119. The community was established in 1878. Kincaid family In 1807, James Kincaid and his wife Mary Tritt Kincaid moved from old Virginia and settled in Greenbrier County. They were not favorably impressed with the location and moved further to the west, thus establishing the present-day community. Oak Hill, West Virginia
Oak Hill is a city in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 8,179 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Beckley metropolitan area. Country singer Hank Williams died in Oak Hill on his way to a concert on January 1, 1953. The city is also home to the historic Oak Hill Railroad Depot which still stands today as an artisan shop. More recently, recreation has become a leading industry as the city neighbors the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. History Oak Hill was settled in 1820. The community was so named on account of an oak tree at the elevated town site. It was incorporated as a town in 1905. Oak Hill is the supposed place of death of Hank Williams. According to his driver Charles Carr, they had stopped at a gas station in Oak Hill and found Williams dead in the backseat.
