Southeastern Railway Museum
The Southeastern Railway Museum (initialism, initialized SRM, AAR code SMRX) is a railway museum, railroad museum located in Duluth, Georgia, Duluth, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, in suburban Atlanta, Georgia, Atlanta. The museum was founded in 1970 by the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. There are over 90 pieces of rolling stock exhibited on the site. In 2000, the museum was given the title of being Georgia's official transportation history museum, and the collection of exhibits continues to diversify to reflect this. In addition to the rolling stock there is a wide variety of railroad artifacts and an extensive archive. The grounds also contain the restored 1871 Duluth, Georgia, Duluth passenger train depot, a G16/Park train ride, and a model railroad housed in Building 1. New York, Ontario And Western Railway
The New York, Ontario and Western Railway, commonly known as the O&W or NYO&W, was a regional railroad founded in 1868. The last train ran from Norwich, New York, to Middletown, Orange County, New York, Middletown, New York, in 1957, after which it was ordered liquidation, liquidated by a U.S. bankruptcy judge. It was the first Class I U.S. railroad to be abandoned in its entirety. The railroad began life as the New York and Oswego Midland Railroad, organized by Dewitt C. Littlejohn of Oswego, NY, in 1868. Its mainline extended from Weehawken, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City, to Oswego, New York, a port city on Lake Ontario. Chattahoochee Valley Railroad
The Chattahoochee Valley Railway was a shortline railroad linking a number of textile mills between West Point, Georgia, and McGinty, Alabama, for a total distance of . As a subsidiary of West Point Pepperell, the entire railroad was abandoned in 1992. History Originally the line was constructed by the Chattahoochee Valley Railroad on July 2, 1895 from Langdale to Lanett, and was extended to Riverview by 1897. In 1900, the railroad was reorganized to become the Chattahoochee Valley Railway. Further expansion included new tracks south to Jester in 1899 and north to Standing Rock, Alabama by 1908. By extending tracks further to Bleecker in 1916 the railroad totaled and connected to the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast Railroad, the West Point Route, and the Central of Georgia. The EMD E8 is a , A1A-A1A passenger-train locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of La Grange, Illinois. A total of 450 cab versions, or E8As, were built from January 1950 to January 1954, 447 for the U.S. and 3 for Canada. 46 E8Bs were built from December 1950 to January 1954, all for the U.S. The 2,250 hp came from two 12 cylinder model 567B engines, each driving a generator to power the two traction motors on one truck. The E8 was the ninth model in the line of passenger diesels of similar design known as EMD E-units. Starting in September 1953, a total of 21 E8As were built which used either the 567BC or 567C engines. EMD SW7
The EMD SW7 was a diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between October 1949 and January 1951. It was powered by a 12-567A engine. The SW7 replaced the earlier 1,000 horsepower NW2 switcher in EMD's catalog. A total of 489 SW7 locomotives were produced. The majority of the SW7s were built by EMD Plant #3 in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, 30 TR4 cow–calf paired sets were produced. SW7 production was discontinued in 1951 in favor of the new SW9. The Southern Railway (also known as Southern Railway Company; ) was a class 1 railroad based in the Southern United States between 1894 and 1982, at which time it merged with the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) to form the Norfolk Southern Railway. The railroad was the product of nearly 150 predecessor lines that were combined, reorganized and recombined beginning in the 1830s, formally becoming the Southern Railway in 1894. Heisler Locomotive
The Heisler locomotive is one of the three major types of geared steam locomotives and the last to be patented. Charles L. Heisler received a patent for the design in 1892, following the construction of a prototype in 1891. Somewhat similar to a Climax locomotive, Heisler's design featured two cylinders canted inwards at a 45-degree angle to form a 'V-twin' arrangement. Power then went to a longitudinal drive shaft in the center of the frame that drove the outboard axle on each powered truck through bevel gears in an enclosed gearcase riding on the axle between the truck frames. The inboard axle on each truck was then driven from the outboard one by external side (connecting) rods. In 1897, Heisler received a patent on a three-truck locomotive.Charles L. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 0-4-4 represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, four powered and coupled driving wheels on two axles, and four trailing wheels on two axles. This type was only used for tank locomotives. In the UK 0-4-4 tanks were mainly used for suburban or rural passenger duties. Southern Railway 1509
Southern Railway "''Maud''" 1509 is an A class 0-4-4T " Forney" type steam locomotive and the oldest surviving steam locomotive of the Southern Railway. The engine was built by Baldwin in December 1879 for the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line Railway, originally numbered 27 and named ''Talullah''. The railroad was later absorbed by the Richmond and Danville Railroad which itself became the Southern Railway, and thus, ''Talullah'' ultimately became Southern No. 1509. Very little is known about the engine's history prior to the 1903 renumbering and company records from that time are largely either missing, incomplete, and/or contain conflicting data. The 1509 was likely used for passenger service, particularly with suburban or commuter runs, and when renumbered, it received the ''A'' class designation, being a switcher engine used in yard service.
