South Texas Derby
The South Texas Derby is a regular season series between American soccer clubs Rio Grande Valley FC Toros of Edinburg, Texas and San Antonio FC of San Antonio, Texas. Both teams compete in the Western Conference of the USL Championship, the second tier of soccer in the United States. The teams are located in cities situated in South Texas and are separated by roughly . Rivalry The first match in the series was on May 7, 2016, at Toyota Field in San Antonio. RGV's Rob Lovejoy scored the first goal in the rivalry in the 69th minute. San Antonio came back from being down 0–2 but eventually lost to RGV as Lovejoy secured the win with a stoppage-time goal. Needing a win in their final regular-season match to secure a place in the 2016 USL Playoffs, San Antonio FC lost to RGV 0–3 in Edinburg. Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
Rio Grande Valley FC, also known as RGVFC or Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, is an American semi-professional soccer team based in Edinburg, Texas operated by Lone Star, LLC. They joined the USL Championship in the 2016 season. The team served as a hybrid affiliate of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. Chris Canetti, Houston Dynamo president, called the relationship "an important and necessary step." The hybrid affiliation, a first for the USL, means that the Dynamo will be responsible for the soccer operation of the club, selecting players and coaching staff. The ownership group, Lone Star, will be responsible for operations and day-to-day management of the club. Charlie Ward (born 19 February 1995) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. Career Youth Ward played with the youth teams of both Aston Villa and Stoke City. Professional Ward signed with USL side Rio Grande Valley on 29 January 2016. On 19 July 2016, Ward signed a short-term loan deal with the Toros' MLS affiliate side Houston Dynamo, so he could compete for them in their upcoming Lamar Hunt Open Cup fixture against FC Dallas.
