South Swindon Parish
South Swindon, previously called Central Swindon South, is a Civil parishes in England, civil parish in the town of Swindon, in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire, England. The parish covers the southern part of the central area of the town, including the Old Town area, and extends south to take in Wichelstowe and Coate Water Country Park, Coate Water. In 2021 it had a population of 62,871. South Swindon is the largest civil parish in the Borough of Swindon by population, and the seventh List of the most populous civil parishes in England, largest civil parish by population in England. The parish borders Central Swindon North, Chiseldon, Liddington, Nythe, Eldene and Liden, Stratton St Margaret, West Swindon and Wroughton. Swindon South (UK Parliament Constituency)
Swindon South is a constituency in the Borough of Swindon, Wiltshire, represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Heidi Alexander of the Labour Party. Alexander had previously been MP for Lewisham East from 2010 to 2018. In the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, the seat was renamed from South Swindon to Swindon South, first contested at the 2024 general election. Boundaries 1997–2010: The Borough of Thamesdown wards of Central, Chiseldon, Dorcan, Eastcott, Freshbrook, Lawns, Park, Ridgeway, Toothill, Walcot, and Wroughton. Stratton St Margaret
Stratton St Margaret is a civil parish in the Borough of Swindon, Wiltshire, England. The parish covers north-eastern suburbs of Swindon including Stratton St Margaret itself, along with Upper Stratton, Lower Stratton and Kingsdown. Geography Stratton St Margaret, once a distinct village, has now become the northeastern part of Swindon and is rapidly becoming suburbanised. The area of the parish was originally much larger than it is now. Most of Gorse Hill was part of the parish until it was transferred to Swindon in 1890, and a large part of the Penhill housing estate was once fields to the north of Stratton St. Margaret. In the south, Nythe was separated from Stratton St. Margaret in 2015 and now forms part of Nythe, Eldene and Liden parish. Town Gardens, Swindon
The Town Gardens is a public park and gardens in Old Town, Swindon, England. The park and several of its structures are Grade II listed. The park is owned by Swindon Borough Council. In 2018 the park was transferred to South Swindon Parish Council on a 99 year lease, and the parish is now responsible for operating and maintaining the park. History The park is located on the site of former Purbeck stone quarries which formed part of the Goddard family estates. The oldest part of the park was laid out by Swindon Urban District Council on the southern part of the site, and opened to the public in 1894. This part of the park included an octagonal bandstand which remains in place today. The park was extended to the northern part of the site in 1902. Wyvern Theatre
The Wyvern Theatre is a 635-seat indoor auditorium in Swindon, England, opened in September 1971. It is owned by Swindon Borough Council and operated by Trafalgar Entertainment. In March 2019, Swindon Borough Council stated the building was likely to reach the end of its life by 2027, when its operations contract ends. Representative Dale Heenan cautioned that structural and maintenance reports showed the theatre required major investment. In November 2023, the authority suggested the site of a new venue could be the town's bus station, as it was slated for demolition. In September 2024, proposals were released for a new multi-purpose theatre with increased capacity on the bus station site. River Cole, Wiltshire
The River Cole is a tributary of the River Thames in England which flows through Wiltshire and Oxfordshire, forming part of the border between the two counties. Course The river rises in Swindon, east of the town centre in the Walcot area. Much of its upper course has been culverted and built over; it can be seen east of the Greenbridge retail park, which it flows through in a northeasterly direction. From there it is culverted, across to Slade Drive where it turns southeast for about three quarters of a mile. At the Piccadilly roundabout it turns abruptly east and skirts the Coleview Estate. It flows east past Covingham and under Merlin Way, through a flood marsh and out under the A419 road. It runs to the east of the town through Stratton St Margaret, South Marston and Coleshill, Oxfordshire. M4 Motorway
The M4, originally the London-South Wales Motorway, is the third longest motorway in the United Kingdom, running from west London to southwest Wales. Great Western Main Line
The Great Western Main Line (GWML) is a main line railway in England that runs between London Paddington and . It connects to other main lines such as those from Reading to Penzance and Swindon to Swansea. The GWML is presently a part of the national rail system managed by Network Rail, while the majority of passenger services upon it are provided by the current Great Western Railway franchise.
