South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium
The South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium (SMIIC), formerly known as the Inter-Institutional Consortium (IIC) is a group of higher educational institutions in the southern portion of Manila. The purpose of the consortium is to collaborate actively to effect social transformation by promoting the cause of education and by making quality and relevant learning accessible to as many as possible. History Established in 1974, the IIC is composed of five schools located along Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila, Philippines. To date, it has accomplished a number of projects and activities to maximize the institutional resources among its member schools. Taft Avenue
Taft Avenue ( fil, Abenida Taft; es, Avenida Taft) is a major road in the south of Metro Manila. It passes through three cities in the metropolis: Manila, Pasay and Parañaque. The road was named after the former Governor-General of the Philippines and U.S. President, William Howard Taft; the Philippines was a former commonwealth territory of the United States in the first half of the 20th century. The avenue is a component of National Route 170 (N170), a secondary road in the Philippine highway network, and anchors R-2 of the Manila arterial road network. Malate, Manila
Malate is a district of Manila, Philippines. Together with the district of Ermita, it serves as Manila's center for commerce and tourism. Etymology The name ''Malate'' is believed to be derived from a corruption of the Tagalog word ''maalat'' ("salty"). Legends known that when two Spanish soldiers asked a woman about the name of the place, the lady's little brother, tasted salt, shouted "Maalat, Ate!" ("Sister, it is salty!"). The Spanish man misheard it, and used the words as the place's name. However this a common modern Filipino 'folk etymology' mechanism (and commonly employed into many Philippine place name etymologies today) and has no historical basis (eg. the term "ate" was not adopted into Tagalog vernacular from Minnan "achi" until much later into the 19th c).
