Dundonald, County Down
Dundonald () is a large settlement and civil parish in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies east of Belfast and is a suburb of the city. It is home to Moat Park, the Ulster Hospital, and Dundonald International Ice Bowl. History The placename is first recorded as 'Dundouenald' in and later as 'Dundonnell'. It comes from Irish ''Dún Dónaill'', 'Donald’s fort', referring to the Norman fort built there when the area was part of the Earldom of Ulster. The forename Dónall is of Gaelic origin, thus "it is likely that the place was named from a pre-Norman fort, perhaps on the same site". It is one of the largest surviving mottes in Ireland, and stands in Moat Park ('moat' being a corruption of 'motte'). St. Elizabeth's Church is located beside the moat, with the Cleland Mausoleum in the adjacent graveyard. Health and Social Care (HSC; ) is the publicly funded healthcare system in Northern Ireland. Although having been created separately to the National Health Service (NHS), it is nonetheless considered a part of the overall national health service in the United Kingdom, with locals mainly referring to it as the NHS for namesake purposes. Downe Hospital
Downe Hospital () is a local hospital in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is managed by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. History The hospital has its origins in the Down County Infirmary which opened in Saul Street in October 1767. It moved to the site of the old horse barracks in Barrack Lane, now Fountain Street, in 1774. A new infirmary was established at Pound Lane in 1834 but by the late 1970s it was already becoming apparent that it was incapable of further expansion. A modern hospital, which was designed by Scott Wilson Group and built on Ardglass Road at a cost of £64 million, opened in June 2009. After services transferred to the new hospital, the old infirmary on Pound Lane closed and was acquired by a developer in November 2014. Lagan Valley Hospital
The Lagan Valley Hospital is a hospital in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It provides services to people from Greater Lisburn, the Lisburn City Council area and other parts of South East Ulster. It is managed by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. History The hospital has its origins in the Lisburn Union Workhouse and Infirmary that opened during the famine in 1841. It became the Lisburn and Hillsborough District Hospital in 1921. The Ulster Hospital, commonly known as the Ulster, is a teaching hospital in Dundonald (at the eastern edge of Belfast) in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is managed by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. History The hospital was first founded as the Ulster Hospital for Women and Sick Children in 1872. It was initially located on Chichester Street in Belfast City Centre but moved to Templemore Avenue in Mountpottinger in 1892. The first X-ray machine at the hospital was installed in 1920 and Dr Beath was employed to operate it. While located in Mountpottinger the hospital was severely damaged in the Belfast Blitz in 1941.
