Inveraray Shinty Club
Inveraray Shinty Club (Camanachd Inbhir Aora) is a shinty club from Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland. The first team plays in the Premier Division and the reserve team in South Division 1. History The club was formed after a public meeting in 1877. The club's first fixture was a 4–1 defeat by Vale of Leven in Govan. The club reached the Camanachd Cup final in the first season in which they competed in the tournament in 1898 but were beaten 2–0 by Beauly. The final was reached again in 1903 but Inveraray refused to travel to Inverness to face Kingussie after the first match at Perth was drawn, and the cup was awarded to Kingussie. The Camanachd Cup was finally won in 1925 however and Inveraray made a successful defence of the tournament the following year. In 1930 the Camanachd Cup was won for a third time. Shinty League System
The Shinty league system is a series of interconnected leagues for shinty in Scotland. It is administered by the Camanachd Association. About the system The system consists of a hierarchy of leagues, bound together by the principle of promotion and relegation. Clubs that are successful in their league can rise higher in the system, whilst those that finish at the bottom can find themselves sinking further down. In theory it is possible for any club's first team to rise to the pinnacle of shinty and become champions of the Premier Division. While this may be unlikely in practice (at the very least, not in the short run), there certainly is significant movement within the pyramid. The number of teams promoted between leagues or divisions is usually one, although promotion and relegation sometimes do not occur due to reserve teams winning leagues or relegation resulting in an imbalanced league. Aberdour Shinty Club
Aberdour Shinty Club is a shinty club which plays in Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. It is the only senior Shinty Club in Fife and was founded in 2001. In 2011, the club entered two teams into senior competition. Its first team competing in Marine Harvest National Division, and its second team in South Division Two. Early history Although shinty has an historical presence in Fife, it has not tended to be a hotbed of the game in recent times. Jamieson records that the old name of shinty in Fife was "carrick", and that it was "still used in the eastern part of that county" in 1825. However, the sport was played in Glenrothes in the 1970s and early 1980s, in Dunfermline in the early 1990s and St. Andrews University has had a team made up of students since the late 1960s. Bute Shinty Club
Bute Shinty Club is a shinty club from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland. It has a reserve team which is in South Division Two. History The club has been reconstituted on several occasions since its formation in 1906. There was Bute Camanachd and North Bute Shinty Club: North Bute competed in the first ever Sutherland Cup final in 1923. The club has existed in its present form since 1946. The club won the Sutherland Cup in 1972 and has won the reintroduced Balliemore Cup on four occasions, notably in the first final in 1985 as well as in 2006, when they defeated a Beauly team who held home advantage. 2006 was one of the club's most successful seasons of all time winning South Division One thus gaining promotion to the Premier Division, winning the Balliemore Cup and reaching the final of the Celtic Society Cup. Glasgow Mid Argyll
Glasgow Mid Argyll Shinty Club (GMA) is a shinty club from Glasgow, Scotland. It is the only senior side in Glasgow and was founded in 1928. They have two men's sides and two women's sides. All GMA teams play at Peterson Park (Yoker / Garscadden). History Glasgow has had many clubs over the years including Glasgow Cowal and Glasgow Skye whose names reflected the Highland area from which they drew their players. However, Glasgow Mid Argyll now draws its players from throughout Scotland. GMA was established in 1928 and won the Camanachd Cup for the only time in 1973. In the late 1980s the club were based at Allan Glen's Sports Centre, Bishopbriggs. Glenorchy Camanachd
Glenorchy Camanachd is a shinty club from Dalmally, Scotland. In 2022, Glenorchy combined with Taynuilt at senior level to field a team as Cruachanside. History Old letters and poetry show that organised shinty was played in Dalmally in and about 1880. These games were played by teams from each side of the River Orchy for a cup presented by a Mr Macdonald, who had returned from Australia. The contests took place on New Year's Day and continued up to 1932. While the game continued to be played in the district, it was not until 1947 that Glenorchy Camanachd was formed. After a period of some success in the 1950s, a severe shortage of players forced the club to fold in 1960 but it was re-formed in 1965 and has played continuously since then. As a junior team the Munro Shield was won in 1952 and 1959, the Campbell Cup in 1958, the Bullough Cup in 1973 and the Sutherland Cup in 1990. Oban Celtic
Oban Celtic (; ) is a shinty team from Oban, Argyll, Scotland. The club won South Division One in 2016. History The Club was founded in 1927 due to a plethora of players being available who could not get a game for either the senior or the junior side of Oban Camanachd. The Club were highly successful from the start, winning the Bullough Cup in their first year and reaching the Camanachd Cup Final in 1937, where they defeated Newtonmore. They won the Camanachd Cup five times in all, and they have also been runners up on four other occasions. They were also South Senior Champions 12 times before reconstruction. The Club has fallen on hard times in the new millennium, being relegated from the old National Division One to South Division One in 2004 and then being consigned to South Division Two due to a poor league position at the time of league reconstruction. Strachur And District Shinty Club
Strachur and District Shinty Club is a Shinty team from Strachur, Argyll, Scotland. The club re-entered league shinty in 2017 after a year at abeyance at senior level as of March 2016. The side was put back into abeyance in 2018 before returning in 2022 with a combined team of players based in Strachur, Dunoon and Glasgow under the banner of Strachur-Dunoon History The club was founded by 1880 and there are traditions of annual games on New Year's Day, with sixty players from Succoth Glen alone. Two of the earliest matches in which Strachur took part were played against Glasgow Cowal. The first took place at Dennistoun Park, Glasgow, in April, 1880 and it resulted in a draw, four hails each. Col-Glen Shinty Club
Col-Glen Shinty Club is a shinty club based in Clachan of Glendaruel, Cowal, Argyll, Scotland. History The club was founded in 1920, and was originally called Colintraive and Glendaruel Shinty Club. The name reflects the two villages from which it has always drawn its players and support, Colintraive and Glendaruel. The name was shortened to Col Glen some time in the 1930s. A sign of the changed demographics of the Scottish Highlands is that Col-Glen could raise three full teams and have nine spare reserves in 1938 but now has only one adult side. Due to the sparse population, the club has folded on three occasions, between 1966 and 1968. 1993 and 1996. and for a longer period between 1997 and 2005.
