South Devon Alliance
The South Devon Alliance (SDA) was a short-lived minor political party in Teignbridge District, Devon, England. History The South Devon Alliance was founded on 23 March 2021. It had emerged out of the "Newton Says No" group, who campaigned to stop housing development within the area. In February 2023, two members of Newton Abbot Town Council joined the party. In the 2023 Teignbridge District Council election, the SDA won 9 seats. One candidate was David Knopfler from Dire Straits who contested Ashburton and Buckfastleigh ward. In a 2024 by-election in the same ward the SDA came in second place. Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish on the River Teign in the Teignbridge, Teignbridge District of Devon, England. Its population was 24,029 in 2011, and was estimated at 26,655 in 2019. It grew rapidly in the Victorian era as the home of the South Devon Railway Company, South Devon Railway locomotive works. This later became a major steam Motive power depot, engine shed, retained to service British Railways diesel locomotives until 1981. It now houses the Brunel industrial estate. Teignbridge
Teignbridge is a local government district in Devon, England. Its council is based in the town of Newton Abbot. The district also includes the towns of Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Dawlish, Kingsteignton and Teignmouth, along with numerous villages and surrounding rural areas. Teignbridge contains part of the south Devon coastline, including the Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve. Some of the inland western parts of the district lie within the Dartmoor National Park. 2023 Teignbridge District Council Election
The 2023 Teignbridge District Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect members of Teignbridge District Council in Devon, England. This would be on the same day as other local elections across England. The Liberal Democrats won a majority on the council, which had been under no overall control prior to the election. David Knopfler
David Knopfler (born 27 December 1952) is a British musician. Together with his older brother Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers, he founded the rock band Dire Straits in 1977, serving as rhythm guitarist on their first two albums. After quitting the band in 1980 during the recording of their third album, Knopfler embarked upon a solo career as a recording artist. Early life Knopfler was born in Glasgow, to an English mother, Louisa Mary (née Laidler), a teacher, and a Hungarian Jewish father, Erwin Knopfler, an architect. When Knopfler was four, his family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, where he grew up and later attended Gosforth Grammar School. Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals, lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Pick Withers (drums, percussion). Newton Abbot (UK Parliament Constituency)
Newton Abbot is a constituency in Devon represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Martin Wrigley of the Liberal Democrats. It was previously represented since its 2010 creation by Anne Marie Morris, a Conservative. History Parliament accepted the Boundary Commission's Fifth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies proposing to create this constituency for the 2010 general election which increased the number of seats in the county from eleven to twelve. It replaced the southern part of the former Teignbridge seat, including the town of Newton Abbot itself, as well as Dawlish and Teignmouth. East Devon Alliance
The East Devon Alliance, also known as the Independent East Devon Alliance, was registered as a political party in East Devon at the Electoral Commission in 2015. The party won 10 of the 59 seats in the 2015 East Devon District Council election. In 2017, EDA elected its first Devon County Councillor, former Labour Party member Martin Shaw, representing Seaton and Colyton. Martin Shaw is no longer a Devon County Councillor for Seaton and Colyton following the 2021 election when Marcus Hartnell (Conservative) was elected.
