South Australian State Emergency Service
The South Australian State Emergency Service (SASES, commonly known as the SES) is the South Australian branch of the State Emergency Service, partner of the Australian Council of State Emergency Services. The service, founded in 1962, is Volunteering, volunteer based, and prepares and responds to emergencies within the state. It receives on average 10,000 calls for assistance per year. The SASES is a separate entity, independent of other branches, and reports to the Dan Cregan, South Australian Minister for Emergency Services. The service is funded by a levy imposed on every household in the state, and is currently led by chief officer Chris Beattie with assistance from the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM). The Ash Wednesday bushfires, known in South Australia as Ash Wednesday II, were a Bushfires in Australia, series of bushfires that occurred in south-eastern Australia in 1983 on 16 February. Within twelve hours, more than 180 bushfires, fires fanned by hot winds of up to caused widespread destruction across the states of Victoria (Australia), Victoria and South Australia. Years of 1979-1983 Eastern Australian drought, severe drought and extreme weather combined to create one of Australia's worst fire days in a century. Cape Jaffa is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the headland of Cape Jaffa on the state's south east coastline overlooking the body of water known in Australia as the Southern Ocean and by international authorities as the Great Australian Bight. It located about south south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about south west of the town centre of Kingston SE. The locality includes a settlement located on the north side of the headland overlooking Lacepede Bay which is also known as Cape Jaffa. The settlement includes a jetty and a marina. A sandbag or dirtbag is a bag or sack made of Hessian (cloth), hessian (burlap), polypropylene or other sturdy materials that is filled with sand or soil and used for such purposes as flood control, military fortification in trenches and bunkers, shielding glass windows in war zones, buoyancy compensator (aviation), ballast, counterweight, and in other applications requiring mobile fortification, such as adding improvised additional protection to armored vehicles or tanks. The advantages are that the bags and sand are inexpensive. When empty, the bags are compact and lightweight for easy storage and transportation.
