South African Games
The South African Games, in some years called the South African Open Games, was a multi-sport event held in South Africa during the apartheid era, in response to the country's exclusion from the Olympic Games. Some foreign athletes participated, sometimes without the endorsement of the national governing body of their sport. Editions 1964 The 1964 South African Games, the first such event, was staged at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Foreign competitors were invited. In January, IOC had revoked South Africa's invitation to the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Multi-sport Event
A multi-sport event is an organized sporting event, often held over multiple days, featuring competition in many different sports among organized teams of athletes from (mostly) nation-states. The first major, modern, multi-sport event of international significance was the Olympic Games, first held in modern times in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and inspired by the Ancient Olympic Games, one of a number of such events held in antiquity. Most modern multi-sport events have the same basic structure. Games are held over the course of several days in and around a "host city", which changes for each competition. Oregon State Beavers Wrestling
The Oregon State Beavers wrestling program was established in 1909. Traditionally a nationally prominent team, the Beavers won the Amateur Athletic Union national championship in 1926 (Oregon State's first national championship in any sport) and have won their conference championship over 50 times. The team has produced 99 All-Americans, 12 individual national champions, is associated with five National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, National Wrestling Hall of Fame members, and has had wrestlers represent their nations at the olympic games on ten different occasions. The team has finished their season ranked in the NCAA top 25 on 46 occasions, including finishing 21 seasons in the top 10 and two seasons as national runners-up. Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a Diving platform, platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Bowls
Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which players try to roll their ball (called a bowl) closest to a smaller ball (known as a "jack" or sometimes a "kitty"). The bowls are shaped (biased), so that they follow a curved path when being rolled. The game is played either in teams or one against one. The game was first played in the 13th century. The New Zealand women's national field hockey team is also known as the Black Sticks Women. 1974 Commonwealth Games
The 1974 British Commonwealth Games () were held in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 24 January to 2 February 1974. The bid vote was held in Edinburgh at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. The event was officially named "the friendly games". There were 1,276 competitors and 372 officials, according to the official history, and public attendance was excellent. The main venue was the QEII Park, purpose-built for this event. The Athletics Stadium and fully covered Olympic standard pool, diving tank, and practice pools were all on the one site.
