SoundTracker (Unix)
SoundTracker is a free tracker for Unix-like operating systems running X Window System for composing music to be saved in module files. Description Its name is a tribute to the 1987 Amiga program Ultimate Soundtracker which is regarded as the first program of this type, while its user interface mostly resembles and indeed functionally mimics Fast Tracker, one of many popular MS-DOS-based audio trackers, supporting saving in its file formats. It generally renders playback using the OpenCP (à la Cubic Player) engine. Initially SoundTracker had used GTK+ (version 1) as its widget toolkit, modern versions (since 1.0.0) use GTK+ 2. Fast Tracker
FastTracker 2 (also referred to as FastTracker II) is a music tracker created by Fredrik "Mr. H" Huss and Magnus "Vogue" Högdahl, two members of the demogroup Triton (who later founded Starbreeze Studios) which set about releasing their own tracker after breaking into the scene in 1992 and winning several demo competitions. The source code of FastTracker 2 is written in Pascal using Borland Pascal 7 and TASM. The program works natively under MS-DOS. History In 1993, Triton released FastTracker. A music tracker (sometimes referred to as just tracker for short) is a type of music sequencer software for creating music. The music is represented as discrete musical notes positioned in several channels at discrete chronological positions on a vertical timeline. A music tracker's user interface is usually number based. Notes, parameter changes, effects and other commands are entered with the keyboard into a grid of fixed time slots as codes consisting of letters, numbers and hexadecimal digits. Separate patterns have independent timelines; a complete song consists of a master list of repeated patterns. Ultimate Soundtracker
The Ultimate Soundtracker, or Soundtracker for short, is a music tracker program for the Commodore Amiga. It is the creation of Karsten Obarski, a German software developer and composer at a game development company EAS. The Ultimate Soundtracker was the first music tracker, and a pioneer of its software category. History Soundtracker started as a tool for game sound development for the Amiga. The program allowed for four-channel hardware mixing on all Amiga computers, but unlike subsequent versions, limited the number of samples/instruments in a song to 15. It allocated the four channels in strict fashion: melody (lead), accompaniment, bass, and percussion. It could export the tracks as a sequence of assembly instructions. Amiga is a family of personal computers introduced by Commodore International, Commodore in 1985.
