Soul Mates (1925 Film)
''Soul Mates'' is a surviving 1925 American silent drama film directed by Jack Conway, based on the 1911 novel ''The Reason Why'' by Elinor Glyn. The movie was the second successful collaboration between Glyn and Conway. The film's sets were designed by the art director James Basevi. Plot Velma is a good little rich girl whose indomitable uncle orders her to wed Lord Tancred, a man she has never met. The same day, she becomes infatuated by a man she meets on the street, not knowing that it is Lord Tancred. When she finds out about his true identity, she becomes convinced he wants to marry her for monetary reasons. She feels betrayed and refuses to speak to him, until she makes an unusual discovery. Jack Conway (filmmaker)
Hugh Ryan "Jack" Conway (July 17, 1887 – October 11, 1952) was an American film director and film producer, as well as an actor of many films in the first half of the 20th century. Biography He was born as Hugh Ryan Conway, on July 17, 1887, in Graceville, Minnesota, USA. Conway started out as an actor, joining a repertory theater group straight out of high school. He then moved into films, and in 1911, became a member of D.W. Griffith's stock company, appearing primarily in Westerns. Four years later, he made his mark as a director and gained valuable experience at Universal (1916–17 and 1921–23), before moving on to MGM in 1925. He remained there until 1948, often helming prestige assignments featuring the studio's top male star, Clark Gable: '' Boom Town'' (1940), '' Honky Tonk'' (1941), and '' The Hucksters'' (1947) – all solid box-office hits. Tony D'Algy (born Antonio Eduardo Lozano Guedes; 1897 – 29 April 1977) was a Portuguese film actor. He appeared in 57 films between 1924 and 1949, including '' The Boob'', a silent comedy where Joan Crawford makes one of her first appearances. He was born in Luanda, Angola, and died in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the older brother of actress Helena D'Algy (born 1906). Ned Sparks
Ned Sparks (born Edward Arthur Sparkman, November 19, 1883 – April 3, 1957) was a Canadian-born character actor of the American stage and screen. He was known for his deadpan expression and comically nasal, monotone delivery. Life and career Sparks was born in Guelph, Ontario, but moved to St. Thomas, Ontario, where he grew up. He left home at 16 and attempted prospecting in the Klondike Gold Rush. After running out of money, he began performing. Billed as a "Singer of Sweet Southern Songs" and costumed in a straw hat, short pants and bare feet, he won a spot as a singer on a traveling musical company's tour. At 19, he returned to Canada and briefly attended a Toronto seminary. He then worked for the railroad and in theater in Toronto. In 1907, he moved to New York City to try his hand in the Broadway theatre, where he appeared in his first show in 1912.
