Sotho Sounds
Sotho Sounds are a band from Malealea, a village in south-west Lesotho. The members of Sotho Sounds are shepherds and built their instruments themselves. History Sotho Sounds recorded their debut album ''Sotho Sounds Malealea'', produced by Risenga Makondo, in 2003. The band sold the album on CDs at concerts. In July 2003 Sotho Sounds performed at WOMAD festival in the UK. In 2012 Sotho Sounds' album ''Junk Funk'' was released on Riverboat Records. Robin Denselow of ''The Guardian'' wrote of the album that "[Sotho Sounds'] approach may be rough and ready but their energy and enthusiasm are contagious." In a review of the album, ''The Independent'' compared Sotho Sounds favourably to Konono Nº1 and Staff Benda Bilili, who also play self-made instruments. That same year Sotho Sounds told Deutschlandfunk that most Basotho were more interested in western music than the traditional music that they play. Malealea
Malealea is a village in the Mafeteng district, roughly 80km from Maseru in southern Lesotho. Located in the Makhaleng valley, ca. 3 kilometers west of the mouth of Botsoela river. The village can be reached from Matelile over 7 km gravel road. WOMEX (short for Worldwide Music Expo) is an international world music support and development project based in Berlin, whose main event is an exposition held annually in different locations throughout Europe. It integrates a trade fair, showcases, conferences, film screenings, networking sessions, and awards. Musicians and their labels have the possibility to make contacts for international touring and album distribution. For 2009–2011, WOMEX was hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark in a new partnership with WorldMusicFair Copenhagen, a consortium of the Roskilde Festival, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and tourist organization Wonderful Copenhagen. WOMAD ( ; World of Music, Arts and Dance) is an international arts festival. The central aim of WOMAD is to celebrate the world's many forms of music, arts and dance. History WOMAD was founded in 1980 by English rock musician Peter Gabriel, with Thomas Brooman, Bob Hooton, Mark Kidel, Stephen Pritchard, Martin Elbourne and Jonathan Arthur. Konono Nº1
Konono Nº1 is a musical group from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are known for their DIY aesthetic, combining electric likembé (a traditional instrument similar to the mbira) with vocals, dancers, and percussion instruments that are made out of items salvaged from a junkyard. The group's amplification equipment is equally rudimentary, including a microphone carved out of wood fitted with a magnet from an automobile alternator and a gigantic horn-shaped amplifier. The genre of the band's music has been characterized as difficult to classify; the group themselves have classified their music under the labels of "tradi-modern" and "Congotronics". Staff Benda Bilili
Staff Benda Bilili are a group of street musicians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They used to live around the grounds of the zoo in the country's capital city, Kinshasa, and play music which is rooted in soukous, with elements of old-school rhythm and blues and reggae. The core of the band consists of four senior singers/guitarists, who are paraplegic (they had poliomyelitis when they were young) and move around in spectacularly customized tricycles. They are backed by a younger rhythm section consisting of abandoned street children who were taken under the protection of the older members of the band. The soloist is an 18-year-old boy (2009) who plays guitar-like solos on an electrified one-stringed lute he designed and built himself out of a tin can. Deutschlandfunk (DLF, ''Broadcast Germany'') is a public-broadcasting radio station in Germany, concentrating on news and current affairs. The Sotho () people, also known as the Basuto or Basotho (), are a Bantu nation native to southern Africa.
