Sophia Sergio (born 16 February 1992) is an Italian beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universo Italia 2016 and represented Italy in Miss Universe 2016 in Manila, Philippines. Early life Sergio is a graduate of the three-year degree course in International Business Management and of the specialist degree in Marketing and International Management at the Parthenope University of Naples. She has two younger brothers and as a teenager he discovered a passion for basketball and judo, while the approach to the world of fashion took place at the age of 15 when he accidentally accompanied a friend to a fashion show. Miss Italia is a beauty pageant awarding prizes every year to young, female contestants from Italy. Since the first edition of the contest in 1939 many of the contestants have gone on to notable careers in television and film. History The forerunner of Miss Italia was '' Miss Sorriso'' (Miss Smile) started in 1939 by Dino Villani, and sponsored by a brand of toothpaste. Contestants were judged by their photographs rather than competing on a runway. After a break during World War II, the contest resumed in 1946 and adopted the present-day name of Miss Italia. Miss Universe 2016 was the 65th Miss Universe pageant, held at the Mall of Asia Arena, in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines on January 30, 2017. This is the second time in the history of the competition that the pageant skipped an entire year, following the 2014 pageant which was held in January 2015. At the end of the event, Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines crowned Iris Mittenaere of France as Miss Universe 2016.
