Sooke
Sooke () is a district municipality on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Canada, by road from Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Sooke, the westernmost of Greater Victoria's Western Communities, is to the north and west of the Sooke Basin. It is a regional centre for residents in neighbouring communities, including Otter Point, Shirley and Jordan River. Geography Climate Sooke has a Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters, defined by the Köppen climate classification as ''Csb''. Although its precipitation is more like dry summer climates, its temperatures resemble oceanic climates as found in Ireland, for example. East Sooke
East Sooke is an unincorporated community south and east of Sooke, British Columbia, Canada. It consists of over 500 houses (and one volunteer fire department), along with the headquarters of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) organization on the south side of the Sooke Basin. East Sooke borders on East Sooke Regional Park, an area of , with views south to Olympic National Park in the United States. East Sooke does not have a town council. Instead it is governed by a regional director who is also responsible for other unincorporated areas in the Capital Regional District (the regional district of Greater Victoria). East Sooke's general character is rural, although it is a bedroom community of Victoria, British Columbia. Sooke Basin
Sooke Basin is a small (10 km2) body of water on the southern end of Vancouver Island in southwestern British Columbia. It is connected to the Strait of Juan de Fuca by Sooke Harbour, a 4 km long narrow natural harbour. Geography Sooke Basin is a salt water body located between Sooke and East Sooke. The shores of Sooke Basin are mostly rock, but along the north shore there are beautiful sandy beaches. Scattered around the remainder are occasional muddy and pebbly beaches. Islands Three small islets form the Goodridge Islands, located in the southeastern portion of the basin. Coves Roche Cove, a small shallow cove is located on the east end of Sooke Basin and is the focal point of the 143-hectare Roche Cove Regional Park. Sooke Lake
Sooke Lake is a natural lake and the main reservoir of Greater Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. It is owned and operated by the Capital Regional District and supplies water to approximately 350,000 people. It has a usable water supply of 92.7 million cubic meters, of a total of 160.32 million cubic meters. Rithet Creek is the main inflow and makes up approximately 25% of the supply. The total watershed area is . History The development of Sooke Lake as a reservoir was approved in 1910, and construction began in 1912. A concrete dam was constructed and raised the water level . Water was transported to the city of Victoria via the Sooke Flowline, a concrete aqueduct. The project was completed in 1915. T'Sou-ke Nation
The T'Sou-ke Nation of the Coast Salish peoples, is a band government whose reserve community is located on Vancouver Island, in the province of British Columbia, Canada. In February 2013, the T'Sou-ke Nation had 251 registered members, with two reserves around the Sooke Basin on the Strait of Juan de Fuca at the southern end of Vancouver Island, with a total area of 67 hectares (165 acres). The T'Souk-e people are the namesake of the town of Sooke, British Columbia and its surrounding harbour and basin. Etymology The spelling ''T'Sou-ke'' is an exoticization of ''Sooke'', which derives from the name of the area around Sooke Harbor. T'Sou-ke, also spelled Sooke and previously Soke , is the dialect of the North Straits Salish language spoken by the T'Sou-ke people of Vancouver Island in British Columba. As of 2014, there were no fluent speakers, although there were at least ten speakers remaining who could somewhat speak and understand the language. The spelling ''T'Sou-ke'' is an exoticization of ''Sooke'', which derives from the name of the area around Sooke Harbor. It may be from the Klallam form (now pronounced ), or a relic of an earlier Northern Straits pronunciation; the Klallam preserves the older form, where *u → /a/ in all of the Northern Straits dialects. Alastair Sooke (; born 1981) is an English art critic, journalist and broadcaster, most notable for reporting and commenting on art for the British media and writing and presenting documentaries on art and art history for BBC television and radio.
