Sonoyta, Sonora, is a town in the northern States of Mexico, Mexican state of Sonora. It stands on the U.S.-Mexico border, facing Lukeville, Arizona, in the United States. It is the municipal seat of the municipality of Plutarco Elías Calles, Sonora, Plutarco Elías Calles. Demographics According to the 2010 census, the city had 12,849 inhabitants while the surrounding municipality had 15,652 inhabitants. There were 6,613 male inhabitants and 6,236 female. 96.1 percent of the population over five years of age are Catholicism, Roman Catholic, 3.0 percent are Evangelicalism, Evangelicals, and the remaining 0.9 percent belong to other religions. Lukeville Port Of Entry
The Lukeville, Arizona Port of Entry was established by Executive Order in 1949. It has primarily been a port of entry for passenger vehicles and pedestrians. It connects Mexican Federal Highway 8 in Sonoyta, Sonora, with Arizona State Route 85, in Lukeville, Arizona. Modifications made using funding from the Federal Highway Administration and Mexican businesses in 2011 facilitate the inspection of trucks and improve general throughput. Much of the traffic using this crossing is people traveling to the popular beach town of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. The Lukeville crossing was closed on December 4, 2023, by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This action was taken to reassign border officers to manage an increase in migrant arrivals. Federal Highway 2 (, Fed. 2) is a toll-free part of the Mexican federal highway corridors () that runs along the U.S. border. The highway is in two separate improved segments, starting in the west at Tijuana, Baja California, on the Pacific coast and ending in the east in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, on the Gulf of Mexico. Lukeville, Arizona
Lukeville is a small unincorporated town on the Mexico–United States border in southern Pima County, Arizona, United States. It was started by Charles Luke, brother of World War I aviator Frank Luke, an Arizona native who was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. Description The community lies at Lukeville Port of Entry border crossing into Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico. It is the terminus of State Route 85 and is located entirely within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. There is a stop-over spot for buses that are bound for Phoenix and Tucson along with a post office and a duty-free shop. Eusebio Kino
Eusebio Francisco Kino, Jesuits, SJ (, ; 10 August 1645 – 15 March 1711), often referred to as Father Kino, was an Italian Jesuit, missionary, geographer, explorer, cartographer, mathematician and astronomer born in the Prince-Bishopric of Trent, Bishopric of Trent, Holy Roman Empire. The Pima Revolt, also known as the O'odham Uprising or the Pima Outbreak, was a revolt of Pima native Americans in 1751 against colonial forces in Spanish Arizona and one of the major northern frontier conflicts in early New Spain. Background The revolt culminated from decades of violence by the local Spanish settlers against Natives beginning in 1684. The period was characterized by local Natives gradual loss of autonomy and territory.
