Sebago Lake State Park
Sebago Lake State Park is a public recreation area encompassing on the north shore of Sebago Lake in the New England town, towns of Naples, Maine, Naples and Casco, Maine, Casco, Cumberland County, Maine, Cumberland County, Maine. It opened in 1938 as one of Maine's original five state parks. The mostly forested park is divided into east and west sections by the Songo River. It is managed by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Activities and amenities The park offers 250 campsites in two campgrounds, Naples Beach and Witch Cove, each with beaches and boat ramps. Boating and swimming are also available at the day-use area in the park's east section. Other park features include hiking trails and roadway biking. Long Lake (Maine)
Long Lake is a lake between the towns of Naples, Maine, Bridgton, Maine and Harrison, Maine. It is connected to Brandy Pond through the Chute River. Long Lake was created by receding glaciers, and has many coves and rocks. Canal boats from Portland harbor reached Long Lake through the Cumberland and Oxford Canal, completed in 1832. The canal's Songo Lock facilities still control Long Lake water level. Each November, Long Lake is drained by about so that melting snow does not cause a flood in the spring. The lake is the site of many summer camps, including Camp Newfound, Camp Owatonna, Camp Takajo, and Camp Wildwood (actually located on nearby Wood's Pond). The famous author, E.B. White, owned a vacation house on Long Lake in the North Bridgton section. Sebago Lake (Sih-Bay-Goh) is the deepest and second-largest lake in the U.S. state of Maine. The lake is deep at its deepest point, with a mean depth of . Sebago is the deepest lake wholly contained within the entire New England region. Along with Lake Champlain, Sebago is one of the only lakes in the area that does not consistently freeze solid during the winter months, with total ice cover occurring for only a short period of time every few winters. Songo Lock
Songo Lock is the last surviving lock of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal, a 19th-century canal in southern Maine, United States. The lock is located on the Songo River, just above its confluence with the Crooked River at the northern end of Sebago Lake State Park in the town of Naples. The lock, built in 1830, is now used primarily during the summer months by pleasure craft. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated as a Maine Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2001. Cumberland And Oxford Canal
The Cumberland and Oxford Canal was opened in 1832 to connect the largest lakes of southern Maine with the seaport of Portland, Maine. The canal followed the Presumpscot River from Sebago Lake through the towns of Standish, Windham, Gorham, and Westbrook. The Canal diverged from the river at Westbrook to reach the navigable Fore River estuary and Portland Harbor. The canal required 27 locks to reach Sebago Lake at an elevation of above sea level. One additional lock was constructed in the Songo River to provide of additional elevation to reach Long Lake from Sebago Lake. Total navigable distance was approximately from Portland to Harrison at the north end of Long Lake. The ''Songo River Queen II'' is a diesel-powered stern paddle-wheeler, built as a replica of the steam-powered vessels that traveled the Mississippi River and can hold up to 300 people. The paddlewheeler is known for becoming landlocked in Long Lake in September 2011, after a 20-year career on the Songo River, due to the construction of a fixed bridge on Naples Causeway. History The ''Songo River Queen II'', which was christened on Memorial Day weekend of 1982, is the successor to the ''Songo River Queen'', which burned in a midnight fire on Columbus Day weekend in 1981.
