Song Dan (general)
Song Dan (; born July 1956) is a lieutenant general in the People's Liberation Army of China. He was a representative of the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. He is a member of the 19th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. He is a delegate to the 13th National People's Congress. Biography Song was born in Kunming, Yunnan, in July 1956, while his ancestral home in Sihong County, Jiangsu. After resuming the college entrance examination, in 1978, he was accepted to Southwest University of Political Science & Law and worked in the Security Office of Kunming Military District after graduation. In July 2006, he was promoted to become director of the Legislative Affairs Bureau of the Central Military Commission, a position he held until 2010, when he was appointed deputy director of the General Office of the Central Military Commission. Song is the pinyin transliteration of the Chinese family name wiktionary:宋, 宋. It is transliterated as Sung in Wade-Giles, and Soong is also a common transliteration. In Chinese culture, an ancestral home is the place of origin of one's extended family. It may or may not be the place where one is born. For instance, Lien Chan was born in Xi'an, but his ancestral home is Zhangzhou. Definition A subjective concept, a person's ancestral home could be the birthplace of ''any'' of their patriline ancestors. Su Shi limited it to five generations, i.e. it refers to the home of one's great-great-grandfather. Even more broadly, an ancestral home can refer to the first locality where a surname came to be established or prominent. Commonly, a person usually defines their hometown as what their father considers to be his ancestral home. Jiang ( formerly romanized chiang and usually translated general) is a general officer rank used by China and Taiwan. It is also used as jang in North and South Korea, shō in Japan, and tướng in Vietnam. Chinese People's Liberation Army The same rank names are used for all services, prefixed by ''haijun'' () or ''kongjun'' (). Under the rank system in place in the PLA in the era 1955–1965, there existed the rank of (). This rank was awarded to 10 of the veteran leaders of the PLA in 1955 and never conferred again. It was considered equivalent to the Soviet rank of army general. The decision to name the equivalent rank () when it was briefly re-established in 1988-1994 was likely due to a desire to keep the rank of an honorary one awarded after a war, much as General of the Armies in the United States Army.
