Somnath Dasgupta
Professor Somnath Dasagupta was the vice-chancellor of Assam University till 13 November 2015 and professor of metamorphic geology at Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. Career Professor Dasgupta had his bachelor's degree in geological sciences from Jadavpur University in the year 1971. From the same institute he completed his master's degree in applied geology in 1974 and PhD in 1979 titled "A study of the geology and ore mineralisation along the Madan Kudan - Kolihan section, Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, India". He served Geological Survey of India for four years. He joined Jadavpur University as faculty in 1981. He shifted to Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Kolkata in 2009. Assam University
Assam University is a central public university located at Silchar, Assam, India. It was founded in the year 1994 by the provisions of an act enacted by the Parliament of India. Former Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha is the Chancellor, the Governor of Assam is the Chief Rector and the President of India is acting as the Visitor of the university. Silchar
Silchar is a city and the headquarters of the Cachar district of the state of Assam, India. It is second largest city of Assam after Guwahati in terms of population and GDP. It is also administrative capital of Barak Valley division. It is located south east of Guwahati. It was founded by Captain Thomas Fisher in 1832 when he shifted the headquarters of Cachar to Janiganj in Silchar. Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock to new types of rock in a process called metamorphism. The original rock (protolith) is subjected to temperatures greater than and, often, elevated pressure of or more, causing profound physical or chemical changes.
