''Some Time Ago'' is the 37th album by American jazz vocalist Mark Murphy. It was recorded in 1999 when Murphy was 68 years old and released by the HighNote Records label in the United States in 2000. The album is a collection of jazz bebop tunes and standards with Murphy backed by a jazz quintet. Background ''Some Time Ago'' was Murphy's first of five releases on Joe Fields' label HighNote after Fields sold Muse Records to Joel Dorn. Fields. inspired by mentor Bob Weinstock's development and sale of Prestige Records to Fantasy Records for a large profit, had always intended to sell Muse. He almost immediately formed HighNote Records with his son and signed on Murphy. Murphy started professionally in the 1950s when bebop was flourishing. Mark Howe Murphy (March 14, 1932 – October 22, 2015) was an American jazz singer based at various times in New York City, Los Angeles, London, and San Francisco. He recorded 51 albums under his own name during his lifetime and was principally known for his innovative vocal improvisations. Winard Harper
Hiram Winard Harper (born June 4, 1962) is an American jazz drummer. Career Harper played in the 1980s with Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and with Betty Carter for four years. While working with Carter he met Wycliffe Gordon, with whom Harper would collaborate repeatedly. From 1988 to 1993 he worked with his brother, trumpeter Philip Harper, in the group The Harper Brothers, alongside Justin Robinson, Javon Jackson, Walter Blanding, Kiyoshi Kitagawa, Stephen Scott, Kevin Hays, Michael Bowie, and Nedra Wheeler. After the dissolution of the Harper brothers, Winard recorded several albums as a leader. In the early 2000s he worked with his sextet and performed at Lincoln Center in New York City. ''Kerouac, Then and Now'' is a 1989 studio album by Mark Murphy. ''Kerouac, Then and Now'' is the 25th recorded album by American jazz vocalist Mark Murphy. It was recorded when Murphy was 54 years old but not released by Muse in the United States until 1989 when Murphy was 57. The release is a tribute to Beat writer Jack Kerouac and bebop. Steven Frank LaSpina (born March 24, 1954) is an American jazz bassist who plays both upright and electric bass. Life and career Steve LaSpina was born in Wichita Falls, Texas; his father and grandfather both played in dance bands. He attended the University of Illinois and DePaul University, and first began playing professionally in Chicago in the 1970s. He played with Bunky Green, Larry Novak, Joe Daley (1975–79), and Chet Baker (1978). In 1978 he also began working with Marian McPartland, with whom he would collaborate until 1986. He moved to New York City in 1979 and played with Mel Lewis's orchestra (1978–82), Stan Getz (1986-87), Jim Hall (from 1988), Andy LaVerne (from 1989), and Benny Carter (latter half of the 1990s). Sean Smith (born 1965 in Norwalk, Connecticut) is an American jazz double bass player and composer. Early life and education Sean Smith was born in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1965 to very supportive but non-musical parents. He grew up in Cos Cob, Connecticut. Smith began learning the alto saxophone in the fourth grade, then switched to the electric bass (in junior high school) and played rock and roll, before finally finding the double bass in high school and engaging with jazz music. Some of his early influences were Miles Davis and Weather Report, especially Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius. He was also influenced by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as the great jazz composers, Brazilian music, and the great American songbook. Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer, songwriter, conductor, and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time. Dawn Upshaw (born July 17, 1960) is an American soprano. She is the recipient of several Grammy Awards and has released a number of Edison Award-winning discs; she performs both opera and art song, and her repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary.
