Somali National Bandy Association
Somali National Bandy Association is the governing body for the sports of bandy and rink bandy for Somalia. The organization was founded in 2013 and is formally a part of the Somali Olympic Committee. The same year, the Somalia national bandy team became the first squad from Africa to join the Federation of International Bandy. The team consists of Somalian nationals, mostly living in Sweden. It played in the 2014 Bandy World Championship. Bandy is a winter sport and ball sport played by two teams wearing ice skates on a large ice surface (either indoors or outdoors) while using sticks to direct a ball into the opposing team's goal. The international governing body for bandy is the Federation of International Bandy (FIB). The playing surface, called a bandy field or bandy rink, is a sheet of ice which measures 90–110 meters by 45–65 meters – about the size of a football pitch. The field is considerably larger than the ice rinks commonly used for ice hockey, rink bandy, or figure skating. The goal cage used in bandy is 3.5 m (11 ft) wide and 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) high and is the largest one used by any organized winter team sport. Rink Bandy
Rink bandy is a variant of the larger sport of bandy. Unlike bandy which is played on a large bandy field, rink bandy is played on significantly smaller ice hockey sized ice rinks. While a bandy field is about the same size as a football pitch, rink bandy is played on ice hockey rinks. Rink bandy originated in Sweden in the 1960s and was originally called ''hockeybockey''. With the arrival of indoor ice hockey arenas, it was a way for bandy players to practice on ice for a longer time of the year by making use of the new indoor facilities. Due to the fact that bandy fields are much larger than ice hockey rinks, playing surfaces for bandy were still only made outdoors in the wintertime when artificial freezing was unnecessary. Somalia National Bandy Team
Somalia national bandy team represents Somalia in the Bandy World Championship. It is controlled by the Somali National Bandy Association, which is a member of the Federation of International Bandy. The squad participated in the 2014 Bandy World Championship in Irkutsk, Russia, the first team from Africa to take part in bandy competitions. They participated in all following tournaments as well, consistently taking the last position. Background All selected players, except an ice hockey player living in Canada, are Somali nationals who live in the Swedish town of Borlänge and play for the local club Borlänge Bandy (Borlänge-Stora Tuna BK, later renamed Peace & Love City). The Federation of International Bandy (FIB; french: Fédération internationale de bandy, russian: Международная федерация хоккея с мячом, sv, Internationella Bandyförbundet) is the international governing body for the sport of bandy, including the variant called rink bandy. The federation is headquartered in Söderhamn, Sweden. History Bandy as we know it today has been played since the later half of the 19th Century. Rules were set up in the 1890s by the National Bandy Association in England and by the corresponding body in Russia. The Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG) was founded on 15 May 1908 at 34 Rue de Provence in Paris, France, at a time when bandy and ice hockey were seen as variants of the same game. The 2014 Bandy World Championship was held between 26 January and 2 February 2014, in Irkutsk and Shelekhov, Russia. 17 nations participated in the tournament, playing in two divisions partitioned into two subdivisions.
