Solomon Solis-Cohen
Solomon da Silva Solis-Cohen (1857–1948) was an American physician, professor of medicine and prominent Zionist. Biography Solomon Solis-Cohen was educated at public schools in Philadelphia. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1872 and the Master of Arts degree in 1877 from Philadelphia's Central High School. He taught Hebrew in the school of the Hebrew Education Society of Philadelphia for two years while studying medicine (1881–1883) and received his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in 1883. Solis-Cohen taught in 1887–1902 at the Philadelphia Polyclinic and in 1890–1892 at Dartmouth College. He was a professor of clinical medicine at Jefferson Medical College from 1902 to 1927, when he retired as professor emeritus. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a trustee of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia Convention. His basic research in medicine was widely noted. Jews in Philadelphia can trace their history back to Colonial America. Jews have lived in Philadelphia since the arrival of William Penn in 1682. Colonial History Jewish traders have operated in southeastern Pennsylvania since at least the 1650s. The first Jewish resident of the city on record was Jonas Aaron whose name appears in 1703 in the ''American Historical Register''. Several Jewish families had immigrated to Philadelphia by 1734, as recorded by German traveler von Beck who listed them among the religious sects of the town. Jacob Da Silva Solis-Cohen
Jacob da Silva Solis-Cohen (1838 – December 22, 1927) was a physician who specialized in the field of laryngology. Personal life Jacob da Silva Solis-Cohen was born in New York City to Myer David Cohen and Judith Simiah da Silva Solis who were both from prominent Sephardic families. He was an elder brother of Leon da Silva Solis-Cohen and Solomon Solis-Cohen and a grandson of Jacob da Silva Solis. Jacob da Silva Solis-Cohen's family can be traced back to their expulsion from Spain. Of note is Solomon da Silva Solis (Jacob da Silva Solis-Cohen's great-grandfather), who fled to Amsterdam from Spain in the 17th century and married Isabel da Fonseca, daughter of the marquis of Turin, count of Villa Real and Monterrey. World Zionist Congress
The Zionist Congress was established in 1897 by Theodor Herzl as the supreme organ of the Zionist Organization (ZO) and its legislative authority. In 1960 the names were changed to World Zionist Congress ( he, הקונגרס הציוני העולמי ''HaKongres HaTsioni HaOlami'') and World Zionist Organization (WZO), respectively. The World Zionist Organization elects the officers and decides on the policies of the WZO and the Jewish Agency, including "determining the allocation of funds."
