Solar Updraft Tower
The solar updraft tower (SUT) is a design concept for a renewable energy, renewable-energy power plant for generating electricity from low temperature solar heat. Sunshine heats the air beneath a very wide greenhouse-like roofed collector structure surrounding the central base of a very tall chimney tower. The resulting convection causes a hot air updraft in the tower by the chimney effect. This airflow drives wind turbines, placed in the chimney updraft or around the chimney base, to produce electricity. As of mid 2018, although several prototype models have been built, no full-scale practical units are in operation. Scaled-up versions of demonstration models are planned to generate significant power. A roasting jack is a machine which rotates meat roasting on a spit. It can also be called a spit jack, a spit engine or a turnspit, although this name can also refer to a human turning the spit, or a turnspit dog. Jörg Schlaich
Jörg Schlaich (17 October 1934 – 4 September 2021) was a German structural engineer and is known internationally for his ground-breaking work in the creative design of bridges, long-span roofs, and other complex structures. He was a co-founder of the structural engineering and consulting firm Schlaich Bergermann Partner. He was the brother of the architect Brigitte Schlaich Peterhans. Early career Jörg Schlaich studied architecture and civil engineering from 1953 to 1955 at Stuttgart University before completing his studies at Technische Universität Berlin in 1959. He spent 1959 and 1960 at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, United States. In 1963, he joined the firm Leonhardt & Andrä, the firm founded by Fritz Leonhardt. A guy-wire, guy-line, guy-rope, down guy, or stay, also called simply a guy, is a tensioned cable designed to add stability to a freestanding structure. They are used commonly for ship masts, radio masts, wind turbines, utility poles, and tents. A thin vertical mast supported by guy wires is called a guyed mast. Structures that support antennas are frequently of a lattice construction and are called " towers". One end of the guy is attached to the structure, and the other is anchored to the ground at some distance from the mast or tower base. Edgard Nazare (1914–1998) was a French aeronautical engineer and inventor. He specialized in fluid mechanics, co-founder of the Aeronautical Research Office of Algiers, which became ONERA after the Second World War. Walter de Haas (1886–1969), who wrote under the pseudonym Hanns Günther, was a prolific German author, translator, and editor of popular science books.
