1979 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 18 June 1979, with a second round of the presidential election on 9 July 1979. The presidential election resulted in victory for Hilla Limann of the People's National Party, who received 62% of the votes in the run-off,Dieter Nohlen, Michael Krennerich & Bernhard Thibaut (1999) ''Elections in Africa: A data handbook'', p438 whilst his PNP won 71 of the 140 seats in Parliament. According to one scholar, the elections were conducted "in as free and fair a manner as might be considered humanly possible under local conditions" and the losing candidates publicly accepted defeat. Around 5,070,000 people were registered to vote. The Electoral Commissioner during the elections was Joseph Kingsley-Nyinah, an Appeal Court Judge who was appointed by the Supreme Military Council (SMC). Ibrahim Mahama (politician)
Ibrahim Mahama is a Ghanaian lawyer, and civil servant. He was Ghana's Commissioner for Secretariats and Departments from 1967 to 1968 and Commissioner for Information from 1968 to 1969. Early life and education Mahama is born in Tibung (a town close to Tamale) in the Northern Territories of the then Gold Coast in 1936. After staying with his parents for fifteen (15) years, he decided to go to school all by himself. He began his early education at the Savelugu Primary School from 1951 to 1953, and the Dagomba District Middle School from 1954 to 1955. A year later, he enrolled at the Government Secondary School, Tamale (now Tamale Senior High School), where he studied until 1962. That same year, he gained admission to study at the University of Ghana. There, he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1965 and his Practical Law Certificate in 1966. The Parliament of Ghana is the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. History Legislative representation in Ghana dates back to 1850, when the country was a British colony known as Gold Coast. The body, called the Legislative Council, was purely advisory as the Governor exercised all legislative and executive powers. Reforms were introduced in 1916 and 1925, although the governor's power remained extensive. In 1946, a new constitution was introduced that allowed for an unofficial member of the Legislative Council to become its president while the governor ceased to be the ''ex officio'' president of the body.
