Soccer is a minor sport in the island country of Nauru. The country is not a member of FIFA. History The most popular code of football in Nauru has long been Australian rules football, which was introduced during the early 20th century by Australians working in the phosphate industry. Soccer had been introduced as early as the 1890s, but was overwhelmed by the organisation of Australian rules. In 1954, local rugby and soccer leagues were all wound up as the popularity of Australian rules football on the island skyrocketed. Soccer was re-introduced in the 1960s, by migrant workers from Kiribati, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. It enjoyed a period of relative popularity, and at one point the island had a six-team league. The all-time top scorer for the Tuvalu national football team, Alopua Petoa, is from Nauru. Denig Stadium
Denig Stadium is a soccer stadium on the island nation of Nauru. It is located in Nibok and has a capacity of 1,000 spectators. The stadium is at times unusable as it is also used as a storage area for shipping containers. History The stadium hosted soccer in Nauru until 2004, the last time an organized league was played on the island. The six-team league which played out of the stadium was dissolved after the foreign workers of the Nauru Phosphate Corporation left the country. The Nauru national soccer team played a friendly against refugees from the Nauru Regional Processing Centre at the stadium on 20 June 2014 in celebration of World Refugee Day. The stadium was proposed as a host venue in Nauru's unsuccessful bid to host the 2017 Pacific Mini Games. As part of the proposal, the stadium was to be resurfaced for rugby training. World Refugee Day
World Refugee Day is an international day organised every year on 20 June by the United Nations. It is designed to celebrate and honour refugees from around the world. The day was first established on 20 June 2001, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. Nauru Regional Processing Centre
The Nauru Regional Processing Centre is an offshore Australian immigration detention facility that has been in use from 2001 to 2008, from 2012 to 2019, and from September 2021. It is located on the South Pacific island nation of Nauru and run by the Government of Nauru. The use of immigration detention facilities is part of a policy of mandatory detention in Australia. The Nauru facility was opened in 2001 as part of the Howard government's Pacific Solution. The centre was suspended in 2008 to fulfil an election promise by the Rudd government, but was reopened in August 2012 by the Gillard government after a large increase in the number of maritime arrivals by asylum seekers and pressure from the Abbott opposition. Denigomodu is a district in the western part of the island of Nauru. It is the most populous district in Nauru. It houses the expatriate housing compound "The Location". This makes it Nauru's largest settlement by population. , 16% of the people in Nauru (around 1,900 people) live in Denigomodu. The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is one of the six continental confederations of international association football. The OFC has 13 members, 11 of which are full members and two which are associate members not affiliated with FIFA. The team play their home games at the PCC Track and Field Stadium in the town of Koror City. Currently, the side is ranked as the worst national team in the world by the Elo rating system.
