Soanes Centre
The Soanes Centre is an education and ecology studies centre in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, London, opened in 1993 by David Bellamy. It is owned by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The building is fully accessible and has a large classroom for up to 30 people and a smaller training room. From its opening the Soanes Centre has been used by the Charitable organization, charity Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park to support their care of the 31-acre site as a historic Victorian-era Magnificent Seven cemeteries, Magnificent Seven cemetery, and as a designated local nature reserve and Metropolitan Site for the Importance of Nature Conservation. Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park
Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is a historic cemetery,public park and local nature reserve (including a Metropolitan Site of National Importance for Nature Conservation) in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets within the East End of London. It is considered one of the great London cemeteries of the Victorian era, the " Magnificent Seven", instigated because the typical (until that time) church burial plots had become overcrowded, and reflective of the grand Victorian funerary practices. The cemetery opened in 1841 and closed for burials in 1966 following an Act of Parliament and local authority actions. Since 1990, it has been managed by the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, a registered charity, with the purpose of protecting, preserving and promoting this important space for conservation, heritage and community. David Bellamy
David James Bellamy (18 January 1933 – 11 December 2019) was an English academic, botanist, television presenter, author and prominent environmental campaigner in the UK and globally. His distinctive, energetic style of presenting became well known to UK television audiences in the 1970s and 1980s. Later in life, he made some sceptical statements about climate science. Early and personal life Bellamy was born at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital in London to parents Winifred May (née Green) and Thomas Bellamy on 18 January 1933. Magnificent Seven Cemeteries
The Magnificent Seven is an informal term applied to seven large private cemeteries in London. These are Kensal Green Cemetery, West Norwood Cemetery, Highgate Cemetery, Abney Park Cemetery, Brompton Cemetery, Nunhead Cemetery, and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. They were established in the 19th century to alleviate overcrowding in existing parish burial grounds as London’s population grew during the Victorian era.
