''So80s'' are a series of compilation albums curated by deejay/production duo Blank & Jones featuring 1980s music. They were released on CD and some in digital formats from 2009 to 2019 and included 24 albums. Background Frustrated with finding '80s 12" mixes on CDs, Black and Jones set out on a mission to release '80s 12" compilations of their favourite tunes. The series had 13 compilation volumes (1-13) of various artists, 2 more compilations of various artists, including ''So80s presents Formel Eins'', ''So80s Presents ZTT'' and 10 compilations dedicated to specific artists, including Kajagoogoo, Ultravox, Heaven 17, Billy Idol, Culture Club, Falco, Sandra,'''' Alphaville, Hubert Kah and OMD. ''So80s presents Alphaville'' is a compilation album for the band Alphaville, released in October 2014. The release includes all of their original 12-inch 1980's maxi-singles and their respective B-sides, many for the first time on CD in their original form. Background This 2-CD collection includes all original 1980's 12" singles starting with " Big in Japan" (1984) through "Mysteries of Love" (1989). Also included are the original B-sides and select alternate mixes, including original instrumental and dub mixes. One original mix (Torsten Fenslau's remix of "Big in Japan") is also included. The tracks were remastered from the original master tapes, and initial copies were signed by the band. Kajagoogoo ( ) were an English Pop music, pop band. They are best known for their 1983 hit single "Too Shy", which reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, and the top 10 in numerous other countries. History Beginnings (1978–1982) Formed in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, in 1978, the band were originally known as Art Nouveau, a four-piece avant-garde group, with Nick Beggs on bass guitar, Steve Askew on lead guitar, Stuart Croxford Neale on keyboards, and Jez Strode on drums. In 1981 Art Nouveau recorded and self-released a single, "Fear Machine/Animal Instincts", which sold a few hundred copies and allegedly got airtime on John Peel's show. The B-side of Art Nouveau's single was re-recorded for the B-side of the "Ooh to Be Ah" 7-inch single. Hubert Kah is a German synthpop band, led by Hubert Kemmler (born 21 March 1961). Kemmler is a German musician, composer, songwriter and producer. Biography Kemmler's career began as a member of a trio named Hubert Kah, consisting of Hubert Kemmler (vocals, keyboards), Markus Löhr (guitars, keyboards) and Klaus Hirschburger (bass). It emerged in 1982 at the time of the New German wave and achieved commercial success with the singles "Rosemarie," "Sternenhimmel" and "Einmal Nur Mit Erika... Twelve-inch Single
The twelve-inch single (often written as 12-inch or 12) is a type of vinyl (polyvinyl chloride or PVC) gramophone record that has wider groove spacing and shorter playing time with a "single" or a few related sound tracks on each surface, compared to LPs (long play) which have several songs on each side. It is named for its diameter that was intended for LPs. This technical adaptation allows for louder levels to be cut on the disc by the mastering engineer, which in turn gives a wider dynamic range, and thus better sound quality. This record type, which is claimed to have been accidentally discovered by Tom Moulton, is commonly used in disco and dance music genres, where DJs use them to play in clubs. ZTT Records
ZTT Records is a British record label founded in 1983 by the record producer Trevor Horn, the businesswoman Jill Sinclair and the ''NME'' journalist Paul Morley. They released music by acts including Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Grace Jones, the Art of Noise and Seal (musician), Seal. In December 2017, Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired ZTT Records, along with Stiff Records. The ZTT and Stiff back catalogues were licensed to BMG Rights Management under Union Square Music until 2022, when Universal relaunched the label. History ZTT is an initialism of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's sound poem ''Zang Tumb Tumb'', which described "zang tumb tumb" as the sound of a machine gun. Ultravox
Ultravox (earlier styled as Ultravox!) were a British new wave band, formed in London in April 1974 as Tiger Lily. Between 1980 and 1986, they scored seven Top Ten albums and seventeen Top 40 singles in the UK, the most successful of which was their 1981 hit "Vienna". From 1974 until 1979, singer John Foxx was frontman and the main driving force behind Ultravox. Foxx left the band in March 1979 to embark on a solo career. Midge Ure took over as lead singer, guitarist and frontman after he and keyboardist Billy Currie worked on the studio project Visage. Ure revitalised the band and steered it to commercial chart success lasting until 1987, at which time the group disbanded.
