Snowbird Mountain Lodge
The Snowbird Mountain Lodge is an historic hotel property in rural Graham County, North Carolina. It is located on the Cherohala Skyway, about west of Robbinsville. The main lodge was designed by Asheville architect Ronald Greene, and was built in 1940–1941 for Arthur and Edwin Wolfe; it was one of the last of a series of architecturally significant mountain lodges built in the region in the first half of the 20th century. The property features commanding views of the surrounding Nantahala National Forest and Lake Santeetlah. The lodge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Robbinsville is a town in Graham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 597 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. It is the county seat of Graham County, county population 8,030. History A trading post was established near present-day Robbinsville in the early 1840s and the town’s post office opened in 1843. The post office originally served Cheoah Valley, then Fort Montgomery in 1849. Robbinsville was incorporated on June 9, 1874. The town is believed to be named for N.C. state senator James L. Robinson. The town water system was installed in 1925. The Graham County Courthouse (North Carolina), Graham County Courthouse was constructed in Robbinsville in 1874 but its floor collapsed two decades later while the building was packed during a murder trial. Cherohala Skyway
The Cherohala Skyway is a National Scenic Byway and National Forest Scenic Byway that connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, to Robbinsville, North Carolina, in the southeastern United States. Its name is a portmanteau of Cherokee and Nantahala, the two national forests through which it passes. Nantahala National Forest
The Nantahala National Forest () is the largest of the four national forests in North Carolina, lying in the mountains and valleys of western North Carolina. The Nantahala is the second wettest region in the Continental US, after the Pacific Northwest and it is part of the Appalachian temperate rainforest. Lake Santeetlah
Lake Santeetlah, part of the Tennessee River watershed, was created in 1928 when Alcoa dammed the Cheoah River as a means of generating hydroelectric power in Graham County, North Carolina. The name "Santeelah" is derived from a Native American word which means "blue waters." The reservoir is largely surrounded by the Cheoah District of the Nantahala National Forest.
