Snake Island (Lake Simcoe)
Snake Island is a lake island located in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. After the War of 1812, these islands, along with Fox Island and Georgina Island were purchased by Chief Joseph Snake (a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation) from the British. The Regional Municipality of York, also called York Region, is a regional municipality in Southern Ontario, Canada, between Lake Simcoe and Toronto. Georgina, Ontario
Georgina is a town in south-central Ontario. The northernmost municipality in the Regional Municipality of York, the town is bounded to the north by Lake Simcoe. Although incorporated as a town, it operates as a township in which dispersed communities share a common administrative council. The largest communities are Keswick, Sutton, and Jackson's Point. Smaller communities include Pefferlaw, Port Bolster, Roches Point, Udora, and Willow Beach. The town was formed by the merger of the Village of Sutton, the Township of Georgina, and the Township of North Gwillimbury in 1971 and incorporated in 1986. North Gwillimbury had been part of Georgina but became its own township in 1826. It took its name from the family of Elizabeth Simcoe, née ''Gwillim''. Lake Simcoe
Lake Simcoe is a lake in southern Ontario, Canada, the fourth-largest lake wholly within the province, after Lake Nipigon, Lac Seul, and Lake Nipissing. At the time of the first European contact in the 17th century, the lake was called ''Ouentironk'' ("Beautiful Water") by the native Wendat/Ouendat (Huron) people. It was also known as ''Lake Taronto'' until it was renamed by John Graves Simcoe, the first List of lieutenant governors of Ontario, lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, in memory of his father, Captain John Simcoe of the Royal Navy. Fox Island, Ontario
Fox Island is one of the islands that are located in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. The island is part of the Georgina, Ontario, Georgina township alongside the other three islands in Georgina (unlike Thorah Island which is part of Brock, Ontario, Brock township). Fox Island is about 0.2 square kilometers or 48 acres. There are some cottages on the island. There are no paved roads on the island but there are some footpaths. Georgina Island
Georgina Island () is the largest of the lake islands of Lake Simcoe, located in southern Ontario, Canada. The island is a Native reserve populated by the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, a band of Ojibwa people. It is also within the Town of Georgina and in the Regional Municipality of York. Before the completion of the Trent–Severn Waterway, the water level on Lake Simcoe was low enough to enable residents to cross in wagons or walk in ankle-deep water to the mainland, at Virginia Beach, Ontario. After the Trent Severn Waterway was completed, the water level increased enough to submerge traditional farmlands and to require a boat for crossing to the mainland. In 2008, of the First Nation's registered population of 666 people, 181 lived on, and 485 lived outside, their reserve. As of 2020, the band has a total population of 923 members. They are one of a handful of First Nations in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area.
