Charles Kingsford Smith
Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith (9 February 18978 November 1935), nicknamed Smithy, was an Australian aviation pioneer. He piloted the first transpacific flight and the first flight between Australia and New Zealand. Kingsford Smith was born in Brisbane. He grew up in Sydney, leaving school at the age of 16 and becoming an engineering apprentice. He joined the Australian Army in 1915 and was a motorcycle despatch rider on the Gallipoli campaign. He later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 after being shot down. After the war's end, Kingsford Smith worked as a Barnstorming, barnstormer in England and the United States before returning to Australia in 1921. He subsequently joined West Australian Airways as one of the country's first commercial pilots. Ian Smith
Ian Douglas Smith (8 April 191920 November 2007) was a Rhodesian politician, farmer, and fighter pilot who served as Prime Minister of Rhodesia (known as Southern Rhodesia until October 1964 and now known as Zimbabwe) from 1964 to 1979. He was the country's first leader to be born and raised in Rhodesia, and led the predominantly white government that Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence, unilaterally declared independence from the United Kingdom in November 1965 in opposition to their demands for No independence before majority rule, the implementation of majority rule as a condition for independence. Michael George Smith (23 April 1955 – 1 August 2014), also known by the on-air nickname of Smithy, was an English television and radio presenter, racing driver, pilot and businessman. During the 1980s, he was known for his appearances on BBC1 as a co-host of '' Breakfast Time'' and the music show ''Top of the Pops''. Smith died on 1 August 2014 from complications of heart failure following major heart surgery.
