Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien
General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien, (26 May 1858 – 12 August 1930) was a British Army General. One of the few British survivors of the Battle of Isandlwana as a young officer, he also distinguished himself in the Second Boer War. Smith-Dorrien held senior commands in the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) during the First World War. He commanded II Corps at the Battle of Mons, the first major action fought by the BEF, and the Battle of Le Cateau, where he fought a vigorous and successful defensive action contrary to the wishes of the Commander-in-Chief Sir John French, with whom he had had a personality clash dating back some years. In the spring of 1915 he commanded the Second Army at the Second Battle of Ypres. He was relieved of command by French for requesting permission to retreat from the Ypres Salient to a more defensible position. Olive Smith-Dorrien
Dame Olive Crofton Smith-Dorrien ( Schneider; 26 February 188115 September 1951) was the wife of Horace Smith-Dorrien, known for setting up the Lady Smith-Dorrien's Hospital Bag Fund. She was also president of the Blue Cross Fund and the Royal School of Needlework. Biography Olive Crofton Schneider was born on 26 February 1881 in the Kensington district of London. Her father was Colonel John Schneider. In 1902 she married Horace Smith-Dorrien. They had three sons, two of whom predeceased their mother: *Grenfell Horace Gerald Smith-Dorrien (1904-1944) served in the army, reaching the rank of brigadier. He was killed by shellfire on 13 September 1944 during the Italian Campaign, whilst commanding the 169th (London) Infantry Brigade. Lieutenant Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien-Smith (7 February 1846 – 6 August 1918) was Lord Proprietor of the Isles of Scilly from 1872 until his death in 1918. Family Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien-Smith was born on 7 February 1846 at Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien (died 8 October 1879) and Mary Ann Drever. He was given the name of Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien at birth. In 1872 he changed his name by Royal Licence to Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien-Smith. His younger brother was Horace Smith-Dorrien. Robert Arthur Smith-Dorrien-Smith (born 1951) is a British businessman and politician. He is also the current leaseholder of Tresco, an island of the Isles of Scilly. Biography Robert Dorrien-Smith was born in 1951 to Thomas Mervyn Smith-Dorrien-Smith and Princess Tamara Imeretinsky. He was raised at Tresco Abbey. At age 8, he attended Sunningdale School, a prep school in Berkshire. He attended an agricultural college before later being educated at Eton. After the death of his father Thomas Dorrien-Smith in 1973, Robert Dorrien-Smith inherited the lease to Tresco at the age of 22. History The foundation stone for the building was laid by General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, the General Officer Commanding Aldershot Command, on 4 March 1908. The building, which was designed by Harry Bell Measures in the Victorian style, was completed circa 1909. It was initially used as a barracks institute, a social facility for soldiers to read, meet, study and play games.
