Smells Like Records is an independent record label based in Hoboken, New Jersey, formed by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley in 1993. Groups that have recorded under the label include Blonde Redhead, Cat Power, The Raincoats, and The Rondelles. The label's name comes from the 1991 hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Steve Shelley
Steven Jay Shelley (born June 23, 1962) is an American drummer. He is best known as the longtime drummer of the alternative rock band Sonic Youth, for whom he played from 1985 until their 2011 disbandment. Biography Shelley was born in Midland, Michigan and played in several mid-Michigan bands, including Faith and Morals and Strange Fruit, and was among the original lineup of the punk band The Crucifucks. Since 1985, he has performed with the noise rock band Sonic Youth, when he replaced Bob Bert. After leaving the Crucifucks, he moved to Manhattan with a friend, living in the apartment of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon for dog sitting purposes while the band was in Europe. When the band returned, former drummer Bob Bert had left the band, and they hired Shelley as their drummer without an audition. Bluetile Lounge
Bluetile Lounge is an Australian slowcore band, formed in Perth, Western Australia in 1991. After releasing their debut full-length album, ''Lowercase'', in 1995, Bluetile Lounge signed to the American independent label Smells Like Records, which released the band's second LP, ''Half-Cut'', in 1998. Attracting little attention in their home city, Bluetile Lounge gained a cult following overseas, partly due to acclaim from international acts such as Low and Sonic Youth. Tony Scherr
Tony Scherr is an American jazz and folk rock bassist, guitarist, singer-songwriter, and record producer. Biography Scherr was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and is a graduate of the Hammonasset School. He played with Woody Herman as a teenager, and moved to New York City in the late-1980s, where he became a prolific session musician, working with artists such as Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Norah Jones, and Ana Egge. He has been a member of a number of bands, such as The Lounge Lizards, Sex Mob, Jesse Harris and the Ferdinandos, and Chris Brown and the Citizen Band. Scherr owns a recording studio and has worked as record producer for many of the artists he performs with. In 2002, Tony Scherr released his first solo album, ''Come Around'', on Smells Like Records. Louis Knox Barlow (born July 17, 1966) is an American alternative rock musician and songwriter. A founding member of the groups Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion, Barlow is credited with helping to pioneer the lo-fi style of rock music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His first band, which was formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, was Deep Wound. Barlow was born in Dayton, Ohio, and raised in Jackson, Michigan, and Westfield, Massachusetts. Barlow has released four solo albums, the latest of which is the May 28, 2021 release ''Reason to Live.'' Later the band signed to DGC/ Geffen. The band was signed to Fire Records in the UK and Europe. The band released two albums, an EP, and multiple singles before calling it quits. Fuck is an American indie rock band, formed in Oakland, California in 1993. It consists of Timothy Prudhomme, Geoff Soule, Kyle Statham and Theodore Ellison. Christina Rosenvinge Hepworth (born 29 May 1964) is a Spanish singer. A veteran of the music industry with a career spanning more than thirty years she was a member of the Spanish groups Alex y Christina and Christina y Los Subterráneos, which were very popular bands before she started a much more risky solo career. Rosenvinge has spoken about facing sexism within the industry and is a vocal critic of it. Lee Ranaldo, the guitarist of Sonic Youth produced one of her albums right before she moved to New York City in 1999. She recorded three albums in english edited by Smells Like Records before moving back to Spain where she has become a revered artist.
